Motorola Solutions is seeking a Field Engineer based in the South West of England (Devon/Cornwall) with travel across the region. You will maintain the Airwave TETRA network, perform fault diagnosis, and conduct planned maintenance on base sites and control rooms.

Climbing, antenna/ODU work, and on-call duties are essential. The role requires knowledge of transmission systems, LoS, and working at height; a valid UK driving license is essential.

Department Overview

As a Field Engineer you will be responsible for the daily maintenance and fault finding/resolution on the Airwave TETRA network which includes transmission systems and Police, Fire and Ambulance control rooms within the Region. Engineers are provided with the training and equipment necessary to perform network maintenance. It is the engineer’s responsibility to maintain and refresh these skills.

Ideal Location: Based in Devon or Cornwall, with a requirement for travel across the South West of England and the flexibility to travel further as needed.

Job Description

Key Accountabilities

• Respond to Network Incidents NMC Alerts: The Network Management Centre (NMC) will alert the engineer when they are the closest engineer with the required skills to resolve a network incident.
• Working Hours: This response is required during normal working hours and out of normal working hours.
• On-Call Rota: Active participation in a 1 in 4 call-out rota is an essential duty of this role. Full compliance is required to guarantee continuous 24/7 geographical coverage for the maintenance and reliability of the Airwave Network.
• Airwave Base Sites, Switches, and Control Rooms: Perform planned maintenance, visual inspections, and functional checks. Provide 1st and 2nd line fault diagnosis.
• Microwave Transmission Operation and Maintenance: Operate and maintain transmission equipment installed on the Airwave Network. This includes MUX/DEMUX operation and maintenance, Microwave radio and identifying possible issues with 3rd party equipment. Provide 1st and 2nd line fault diagnosis. This means you are expected to be capable of handling both the initial identification and basic fix of a problem, as well as escalating your own work to more complex technical investigations if the initial steps do not resolve the issue.
• Rigging & Climbing Activities: Climbing and rigging are essential core duties of this role. The engineer is required to perform climbing tasks and carry out the following activities: TETRA Antenna replacement, Feeder/connector testing and replacement, Microwave equipment replacement and re-panning, Line of Sight (LoS) triage.
• Problem Solving and Planning: Take personal ownership and proactively schedule and manage your daily/weekly workload and where required plan with the scheduling team for any activities that need action, including: Reactive network faults, Antenna faults, Line of sight issues. Planning for site access and daily fault rectification (including consumables and spares management). Resolving service-affecting faults within Service Level Agreements (SLAs), completing timely inspection regimes, reporting exceptions, and executing follow-up work for rectification.

Basic Requirements

• Knowledge, Skills & Experience Required Candidates must have experience in or a strong understanding of: TETRA networks, Transmission network, Line of sight (LoS), Working at Height (including Advanced Climbing), Antenna and Outdoor Unit (ODU) replacement, Feeder termination, Anritsu Site Master/Spectrum Analyzer, 18th Edition electrical regulations (desirable)

• Driving License: Possession of a full, valid UK driving license is essential for travel across the region.
• Working at Height: Demonstrated proficiency and confidence working at height, including on towers, monopoles, and rooftops.
• Teamwork & Autonomy: Capable of working independently or collaboratively as part of a team.
• Travel Flexibility: Willingness to travel throughout the South West region, with the flexibility to cover other regions when required.

Candidates must be eligible to live and work in the UK. Documented evidence of eligibility is required during the recruitment process.

Security Clearance

Ideally hold current UK Security Clearance (SC) and NPPV3, OR be willing to undergo security vetting following a Baseline Personnel Security Screening (BPSS) check. You must be a resident of the UK for a minimum of 5 years to go through these clearances.
