Job summary

Mactech Energy Group seeks a Field Engineer (Welding/NDT Inspector) for the Hinkley Point C project in Bridgwater. You will perform surveillance to verify contractor activities comply with the Work Information and uphold Nuclear Safety Culture.

Reporting to the Construction Superintendent, you will raise NCRs, manage quality records, and support corrective actions while coordinating with site teams to keep works on track and safe.

Qualifications

  • A welding inspector qualification e.g. CSWIP 3.1 or equivalent in line with ISO 17024.
  • PCN level 2 (or equivalent) NDT qualifications - desirable to have one surface NDT and one volumetric NDT.
  • Broad knowledge of Engineering Construction industry, materials and methods.
  • Excellent organisation, delegation and communication skills.

Responsibilities

  • Inspecting and verifying works are constructed in accordance with the contract and quality requirements and notifying action if non-conformances occur.
  • Raising, completing and issuing NCRs and monitoring progress to resolution.
  • Communicating with NNB stakeholders and maintaining strong working relationships for surveillance reporting.
  • Contributing surveillance information to support team and project KPIs.
  • Identifying potential quality issues and supporting mitigating actions.
  • Maintaining HSE requirements and ensuring design decisions are reviewed and approved through formal processes.

Looking to join an expanding team and contribute your knowledge and develop your skills to one of the nation's key infrastructure projects? Opportunity... We are recruiting for a Field Engineer (Welding/NDT Inspector), and you will be responsible to perform Surveillance to give confidence that the activities are performed in accordance with the Contractor's Work Information. You will be a staunch advocate of our Nuclear Safety Culture and help to embed this approach in all processes and activities undertaken on the Project.

You will report to the Construction Superintendent for day-to-day guidance. Input into site wide management issues and a high level of interaction and coordination with other operational members of the site wide team will be required. In addition to reporting and liaising responsibilities, as the Field Engineer you will be required to adhere to (and suggest enhancements and improvements to) company policies, procedures and protocols for construction, health & safety, and other functions.   • As a Field Engineer / Welding Inspector, you'll play a key role in ensuring construction activities are delivered in accordance with the contract, quality requirements and approved processes. Your responsibilities will include:
  • Inspecting and verifying that works are constructed in accordance with the contract, identifying non-conformances and notifying the Construction Superintendent where action is required.
  • Raising, completing and issuing Non-Conformance Reports (NCRs) to relevant contract partners, and monitoring their progress through to resolution.
  • Proactively communicating with NNB stakeholders, maintaining strong working relationships and ensuring surveillance activities are completed and reported in a timely manner.
  • Contributing surveillance information to support team and project KPIs.
  • Identifying potential quality issues at an early stage and supporting the implementation of appropriate mitigating actions.
  • Supporting the team in implementing temporary measures to mitigate risks, maintain safe working conditions and ensure works remain within required quality standards. Following up with appropriate and proportionate actions, such as issuing communications or arranging meetings, to help prevent unnecessary disruption or delays to works.
  • Ensuring design decisions are not made "in the field" by EDF Energy or contractors, and that any required changes are considered, reviewed and approved through the appropriate formal processes.
  • Providing the team with a clear perspective of current and upcoming site activities, helping to anticipate potential quality and construction issues.
  • Ensuring tasks are planned and delivered in accordance with the company's Health, Safety and Environmental (HSE) requirements.
  • Developing and maintaining a strong understanding of construction drawings, construction activities, Quality Control Plans and Quality Inspection Records.
  • Ensuring and monitoring that required Quality Inspection Records are completed, reviewed and agreed before works are covered up.
  • Reviewing contractor performance against authorised Quality Control Plans and identifying any areas requiring corrective or improvement actions.

Who you are...

  • Mechanical Engineering, Materials, Welding qualifications or equivalent vocational training and experience.
  • A welding inspector qualification e.g. CSWIP 3.1 or equivalent in line with ISO 17024.
  • PCN level 2 (or equivalent) NDT qualifications - desirable to have one surface NDT and one volumetric NDT.
  • Broad knowledge and wide understanding of the Engineering Construction industry, materials, trades methods and legal requirements.
  • Excellent organisation, delegation, and good communication skills.
  • Proven experience of writing diaries which are accurate, concise and with relevance to the particular form of contract.
  • Proven track record of working within a large construction team.
  • Good attention to detail when checking work and materials. And the ability to maintain quality standards in a high-pressure environment.
  • Able to establish appropriate working relationships with the contractors.
  • Working knowledge of relevant British & European standards, construction and design codes/guidelines such as RCC-M, BS EN and ASME.
  • Knowledge of the documentation used in safety critical construction and fabrication environments such as Inspection and Test Plans and End of Erection Status Reports.
  • Experience in weld inspection on large construction projects.

You may also have any of the following:

  • Higher level qualifications in both welding (CSWIP 3.2, IWS etc.) and NDT (PCN or equivalent) would be desirable although are not essential for the fulfilment of this role.
  • Experience in large power plant design, manufacture and construction.
  • Good working knowledge of Quality Management practices, methods and processes.
  • Knowledge of the fabrication and installation of pressure systems.
