Job summary

NFU Mutual is seeking a Field based Commercial Underwriter to manage a portfolio across the Midlands, building trusted relationships with NFU Mutual offices and Agency partners while delivering underwriting insight and sound decisions.

You will cover property and casualty risks with autonomy, travel across the West Midlands and surrounding counties, and drive growth with strong technical capabilities and a CII qualification path.

Qualifications

• Proven experience in commercial underwriting, including dealing with complex and higher value risks.
• Strong technical knowledge across a range of commercial insurance products and underwriting principles.
• Experience of working closely with stakeholders, influencing decisions and providing expert guidance.
• Full driving licence and progress toward relevant insurance qualifications (CII).

Job description

Field based Commercial Underwriter

• Build trusted, long-term relationships with up to five established NFU Mutual offices across the Midlands, including Warwickshire West Central - one of our largest businesses, approaching £31 million in scale and continuing to grow

• Take ownership of complex commercial underwriting cases, with the autonomy, technical depth and influence to deliver strong customer outcomes and help drive NFU Mutual’s commercial growth plan
• Field based role (including company car or allowance) with regular travel across the West Midlands, Warwickshire, Staffordshire and Oxfordshire, as well as up to 2 days per week homeworking

As a Field based Commercial Underwriter, you’ll play a key role in driving this ambition by working closely with our Agency Network and providing expert underwriting insight, guidance and decision-making across a diverse portfolio of commercial risks. You’ll help retain valued customers, strengthen portfolio performance and identify sustainable opportunities for growth - making a direct contribution to the long-term success of our commercial business.

By building trusted relationships with up to five established Agency partners across the Midlands and developing a genuine understanding of their customers’ businesses, you’ll deliver high-quality underwriting solutions and positive, long-term outcomes. Our partnership with the Agency Network enables us to offer a personal, face-to-face service and is a distinctive part of what sets NFU Mutual apart, contributing to the trusted reputation that saw us named Which? Insurance Brand of the Year 2025 for the fourth consecutive year.

Working as part of a national team of experienced underwriting professionals, you’ll review complex property and casualty risks, negotiate policy terms within your authority, support large account reviews and help strengthen technical capability across the Agency Network. You’ll have the opportunity to influence the continued evolution of a commercial portfolio that is critical to NFU Mutual’s future, supported by a structured induction, specialist underwriting training and ongoing peer support.

About you

You are an experienced commercial underwriter with a strong track record of handling complex and technical insurance cases. You bring confidence in your decision making, enjoy building professional relationships and are comfortable working independently across a wide geographical area.

So, to join NFU Mutual, you’ll need to bring:

• Proven experience in commercial underwriting, including dealing with complex and higher value risks (i.e., up to £100k premiums)
• Strong technical knowledge across a range of commercial insurance products and underwriting principles including Property and Casualty lines of business
• Experience of working closely with stakeholders, influencing decisions and providing expert guidance
• Confidence analysing performance, identifying trends and supporting continuous improvement
• Relevant insurance qualifications (such as CII), or significant progression towards them
• Full current driving licence required.
