Job summary

Berkshire College of Agriculture (BCA) is seeking a Facilities Operative – Waste and External Areas to join our Estates Department at the Taplow campus. The role is part-time, 25 hours per week, working Monday to Friday 11:00 to 16:30 with a 30-minute lunch break and some weekend work may be required.

You will manage waste and recycling, litter-picking, cleaning bin compounds and external surfaces, and assist with operating vehicles and machinery.

Qualifications

  • Experience in facilities maintenance or grounds care preferred.
  • Willingness to undergo enhanced DBS check and safeguarding processes.
  • Ability to operate college vehicles and machinery with care.

Responsibilities

  • Daily emptying of waste and recycling bins across campus.
  • Collect rubbish from college buildings and around grounds.
  • Regular litter picking to keep the campus immaculate.
  • Keep bin compounds clean and safe; clean external windows, signs and surfaces.
  • Perform heavy porterage tasks; may operate college vehicles or machinery.
  • Liaise with external cleaning contractors and support open days (weekends possible).

Job description

The Facilities Operative for Waste and External Areas role at the BCA campus, involves working 25 hours per week and pays on Scale G of the Support Staff pay scale between G17 £17,218.24 and G19 £18,435.14 (G17 £25,483 up to G19 £27,284 FTE). The role reports directly to the Facilities Supervisor and is responsible for maintaining an outstanding outdoor environment for students and staff. Working hours are Monday to Friday from 11am to 4.30pm, including a 30-minute lunch break, though these hours remain subject to change. Primary duties include the daily emptying of waste and recycling bins across campus, collecting rubbish from college buildings, and conducting regular litter picking to keep the grounds immaculate. The postholder is required to keep bin compounds clean and safe, clean external windows, signs, and surfaces, and perform heavy porterage tasks. Furthermore, the role involves operating college vehicles and machinery, specifying required materials, liaising with external cleaning contractors, using internal IT software, and supporting college open days, which may occasionally require weekend working.
