Job summary

West Sussex County Council is seeking a Facilities Officer to support the Facilities Management team at multiple county sites, based in Worthing. You will help deliver essential building services, safety and compliance, and liaise with staff and the public across a specialist portfolio.

The role requires a full driving licence and flexible approach to travel between sites, with a standard 37 hours per week, Monday to Friday. On-call duties are part of the role.

Qualifications

  • A full, valid and current driving licence.
  • NVQ in Building Services or Facilities Management preferred but not essential.
  • Demonstrable experience of practical building skills (carpentry, plumbing, DIY).
  • Experience in facilities management and mentoring/training desirable.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain and manage facilities and building services to ensure safety.
  • Cover WSCC property portfolio on multiple sites with travel between sites.
  • Work under Area Facilities Manager to ensure health and safety compliance.
  • Operate an on-call rota for emergencies and urgent repairs.

Job description

We are seeking a Facilities Officer to join our Facilities Management team.

You will play a pivotal part in our Property and Assets directorate as a Facilities Officer. The Facilities Management team manages a portfolio of properties. This service provides support and guidance to managers of services including office waste disposal, some grounds maintenance, daily on-site tasks and basic plumbing.

You will be responsible for the effective and efficient delivery of a range of essential Facilities and Building Management Services. This role is customer facing and will involve developing good working relationships with a wide and diverse range of people such as Senior Management, your facilities colleagues, service users and members of the public.

About the role

Salary: £27,254 to £28,598 per annum.

Location: Your office base will be Worthing, covering multiple sites daily

Working pattern: Full-time, 37 hours per week Monday - Friday.

Interview date: week commencing Monday 21 September 2026

Reporting to the Area Facilities Manager, you will work within a team managing maintenance and compliance at County Council buildings and ensuring a safe environment for staff and customers. You will be responsible for the effective and efficient provision of a range of essential Facilities and Building Management Services and implementing regulations that directly impact the health and safety of the building occupiers and visitors.

You would be expected to cover a range of different services within the WSCC property portfolio including fire services, libraries, adult services etc. You would start your day at our Worthing office before using a company van to travel a variety of sites depending on your day.

We operate an on-call rota, whereby you would be expected to keep your work phone on in case of an emergency at a site.

What you'll need to succeed
  • You will need to be a team player and be able to support your facilities colleagues.
  • You will need to be proactive and able to communicate with all levels of staff on site.
  • You will also need to be a good problem solver as the job entails a lot of repair / maintenance tasks in a wide variety of different workplaces.
  • You will need to be able to understand the need to maintain essential building services and security, and the requirement to be flexible in your work routine to achieve this.
Key Skills:
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills are needed to provide clear update on jobs being completed.
  • Ability to anticipate problems and make informed decisions, particularly in responding to major emergencies.
  • Ability to respond independently, analyse problems and implement practical solutions.
  • Have basic IT literacy such as Outlook and WSCC software where full training will be provided.
  • Ability to manage own time and prioritise your workload.
  • Literacy and numeracy skills to understand written instructions describing tasks, e.g. reading instructions to ensure alarm systems are working correctly.
Qualifications and/or experience:
  • A full, valid, and current driving licence
  • NVQ in a Building Services or Facilities Management would be preferred but not essential
  • Demonstrable experience of good practical building related skills, for example, basic carpentry, plumbing and competent DIY skills.
  • Experience of having worked in building and Facilities Management Services is preferred but not essential.
  • Experience of mentoring, coaching and delivering skills-based training to other team members.
