Job summary

Abcam is seeking a Facilities Engineer in Cambridge to oversee reliable operation and maintenance of building systems, including electrical, HVAC and plumbing, across assigned properties. The role supports regulated laboratory environments with a focus on safety and compliance.

Reporting to the Facilities Manager, you will execute preventative and corrective maintenance, keep system records, and ensure KPIs/SLAs are met while adhering to EHS policies and regulatory standards.

Qualifications

• 8-10+ years of experience in a facilities/lab setting.
• Foundational skills in Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
• Ability to learn and uphold Building Code, Regulations and EHS policies.
• Minimum NVQ Level 3, Approved, or Certified Electrical Technician preferred.

• Ensure reliable operation and maintenance of mechanical, electrical, HVAC, and plumbing systems across assigned properties.
• Execute preventative and corrective maintenance, inspections and general repairs to minimize downtime and ensure safe, compliant operations.
• Maintain system records and track work orders against KPIs/SLAs; ensure compliance with EHS, regulatory and site-specific standards.

The Facilities Engineer is responsible for ensuring the reliable and safe operation, maintenance, and continuous improvement of building systems and infrastructure, including electrical, HVAC, plumbing, and general facilities equipment. The role supports regulated laboratory environments, including critical infrastructure and compliance with EHS and industry standards.

This position reports to the Facilities Manager and is part of the Workplace Team within the Workplace Department located in Cambridge, UK. This is a full-time on-site position, supporting critical lab, office, and operational environments. May require occasional out-of-hours or con-call support and/or flexing shift start/end times.

• Perform inspections, maintain systems/system records and tracks work orders against KPIs/SLAs. Ensure compliance with all EHS, regulatory, and site-specific standards.

  The essential requirements of the job include:

• High school diploma/equivalent or relevant technical qualification and 8-10+ years of experience in a facilities/lab setting

• Foundational skills in Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook

• Ability to learn, understand, and uphold Building Code, Regulations, Environmental Health & Safety policies

• Minimum NVQ Level 3, Approved, or Certified Electrical Technician Preferred

• Travel, Motor Vehicle Record & Physical/Environment Requirements:

• Ability to lift 5-10kg routinely throughout the work day as needed

• Ability to occasionally lift up to 30kg as needed

• Ability to stand for long periods of time as facilities/laboratory work requires

• It would be a plus if you also possess previous experience in:

• Construction project management experience

• Supporting BSL-2 lab environments (pressure control, pressurization, and contamination prevention) in biotech/research settings as well as ISO 14001

• Maintaining critical lab systems (ULTRA-low freezers, DI water, CO₂, backup power) in high-throughput labs
