Job summary

The Romero Catholic Academy in Coventry is seeking a hands-on Facilities Assistant to help manage school site security, cleaning, and maintenance. You will support heating systems, supervise safety, and assist with minor repairs under supervision, with real opportunities for training and progression.

Qualifications

  • Level 1 English is required; support to reach Level 2 English/Maths via apprenticeship provider.
  • DBS enhanced disclosure is required before appointment.
  • Experience with building security, routine opening/closing and alarm systems is preferred.
  • Willingness to undertake minor repairs and maintenance tasks.

Responsibilities

  • Be responsible for the security of buildings and grounds, including opening and setting alarms.
  • Keep the site free of litter and manage grounds maintenance across shrub borders, paths and play areas.
  • Assist in repairs and maintenance outside of the core duties, reporting delays to the Facilities Manager.
  • Support heating plant operations, maintain temperatures and hot water supply.
  • Carry out minor carpentry, electrical and plumbing tasks with training and development.
  • Set up portable sports facilities and manage equipment returns to school stores.
  • Maintain stock levels and ensure safe operation of equipment for the role.
  • Monitor fire safety and conduct fire alarm testing.
  • Undertake cleaning tasks as required, without compromising monitoring duties.
  • Assist in emergencies and answer general site-related inquiries.
  • Work during school holidays as defined by the Facilities Manager.
  • Keep walkways clear of snow and ice; order salt and grit as needed.
  • Carry out other relevant duties as requested.

Job description

The successful candidate will:

  • Be level 1 English required ( Level 1 English is needed; support is available through the apprenticeship provider to reach Level 2 English/Maths if not already held.)
  • To be responsible for the security of the buildings and grounds including routine and non-routine opening of the premises and setting of alarms.
  • Ensure that the whole site is kept free of all litter and rubbish including fallen leaves. The general litter/glass etc., clearance from all shrub borders, hedgerows, grass areas, gullies, adjacent walls, paths, drives and play areas;
  • Work with the Facilities Manager/Officers in managing all repairs and maintenance needed outside of this job description, progress chasing and reporting on delays to the Facilities Manager.
  • Under the supervision of the Facilities Manager support the operation of the heating plant, maintain required temperatures and the availability of an adequate supply of hot water.
  • With training and development you will be responsible for minor repair and maintenance work, including: Carpentry, Electrical and Plumbing.
  • To undertake limited grounds maintenance duties including setting up portable sports facilities for play, taking equipment from and returning it to school stores on a day to day basis.
  • To ensure an adequate stock of essential items and safe maintenance and control of equipment for the role.
  • Monitor fire safety and carry out fire alarm testing.
  • Undertake cleaning of areas as required, without encroaching on allocated time required for your monitoring and handy person duties.
  • Carry out procedures in the event of emergencies and provide assistance in dealing with general enquiries relating to the use of the site.
  • To undertake work during school holidays as defined by the Facilities Manager.
  • To keep paths, steps, walkways, etc., free of snow and ice, using and ordering salt and grit as necessary.
  • To carry out any other relevant duties as requested.
