Job summary

UK Atomic Energy Authority is seeking an Exhaust Code Developer to advance edge modelling codes and interface with integrated modelling tools such as JINTRAC. You will study plasma exhaust in current and future tokamaks and contribute to the development of improved models through international collaborations.

The role requires a PhD in plasma physics or equivalent, strong software engineering, parallel programming experience, and the ability to publish and present results to the scientific

Qualifications

  • PhD in plasma physics or equivalent.
  • Knowledge of software engineering best practices.
  • Proven ability to conduct independent research.
  • Good team-player with outward-facing work-ethos due to international collaboration.
  • Knowledge/experience in parallel programming.
  • Good oral and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrable skills in advanced problem solving.
  • Theoretical and experimental understanding of exhaust physics issues.

Responsibilities

  • Contributing to and guiding the development of edge modelling codes.
  • Optimising code algorithms for HPC.
  • Developing interface with plasma core codes and working with UKAEA developers.
  • Performing core-edge coupled simulations and analysing results.
  • Giving presentations to demonstrate new algorithms to modellers.
  • Exploiting tools for edge modelling to study plasmas in current and future devices.
  • Reporting research findings in refereed journal articles and at conferences.

The salary for this role is £48,290(inclusive of a Specialist Allowance) . Onsite working is expected for 3 days a week, however, we actively support requests for flexible working.

This role can be based at any of the following sites:Culham, Oxfordshire.

This role requires employees to complete an online Baseline Personnel Security Standard (BPSS), including The Disclosure & Barring Service (DBS) checks for criminal convictions and possibly a search of open source data.

The Role

Are you looking for an exciting opportunity to make a difference? Join our team and contribute to the future of fusion energy. As Exhaust Code Developer, you will play a pivotal role indeveloping edge modelling code(s) which interface with integrated modelling tools, such as JINTRAC integrated transport modelling framework. Through integrated modelling, the post holder may study plasma exhaust in existing and future tokamaks, such as JET, MAST-U, ITER, JT-60SA, and STEP. You will also propose, and/or integrate improved models through internal and international collaborations and execute, and analyse tokamak experiments in these areas.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Contributingto and guidingthe development of edge modelling codes.
  • Optimisingcode algorithms for modern computers (HPC).
  • Developing interface with plasma core codes and working with UKAEA developers.
  • Performing core-edge coupled simulations and analysingthe results.
  • Givingpresentations to demonstrate new algorithms and features to modellers at UKAEA.
  • Exploiting tools for edge modelling and/or coupled core-edge simulations to study plasmas in current and future devices.
  • Reporting research findings in refereed journal articles as well as at internal meetings, workshops and international conferences.
Qualifications

  • Knowledge of and/or experience of implementing software engineering best practices.
  • Proven ability to conduct independent research.
  • The post-holder must be a good team-player with an outward facing work-ethos as he/she will work closely with scientists around the world.

  • Good oral and written communications skills.
  • Demonstrable skills in advanced problem solving
  • Theoretical and experimental understanding of exhaust physics issues.
