British Dyslexia Association (BDA) is a charity that represents the voice of people living with dyslexia. We aim to influence government and other institutions to promote a dyslexia friendly society that enables dyslexic people of all ages to reach their full potential.
About the role
We're looking an enthusiastic, ambitious, and organised individual to join our team. In this role, you will provide high-level support to our Chief Executive Officer (CEO). This is an excellent opportunity to work at the heart of a charity that is committed to creating a dyslexia-inclusive society.
This role plays a crucial part in the BDA. It ensures smooth operations, including managing schedules, stakeholder relationships and engagement, and governance processes. The financial administration duties ensure accurate invoicing, debt management, and supplier coordination, supporting the charity’s financial health.
Responsibilities
Administrative Support to the CEO:
- Provide high-level administrative support to the CEO, including diary and inbox management.
- Coordinate meetings, prepare agendas, take minutes, and follow up on actions.
- Handle confidential information with discretion and professionalism.
- Liaise with internal and external stakeholders on behalf of the CEO.
- Support the preparation of reports, presentations, and board papers.
- Manage travel arrangements and expense processing.
- Assist with project coordination and tracking key deadlines.
- Provide administrative support for governance processes, including trustee communications, board meetings, and maintaining accurate records.
Public Affairs Support:
- Support the delivery of advocacy plans aligned with the charity’s mission and policy goals, including assisting in organising events such as parliamentary drop-ins, APPG meetings, and roundtables.
- Monitor political and policy developments affecting people with dyslexia and share relevant updates.
- Support with maintaining up-to-date contact lists of MPs, civil servants, and sector partners, and logging engagement activities.
- Support engagement with MPs, peers, civil servants, and ministers by coordinating meetings, drafting correspondence, and ensuring timely follow-up.
- Set up new debtor accounts/contacts and complete supplier forms/portals as required
- Assist the Finance Manager in raising sales invoices.
- Ensure outstanding debts are chased on an ongoing basis. Review debtor balances with the Head of Finance on a regular basis
- Liaise with appropriate departments where necessary, to gather information and resolve problems, and inform them of payments received.
- Undertake some absence cover for the Finance Manager.
- Assist the Finance Manager in the setup of supplier accounts.
General:
- Ensuring that the values and standards of the BDA are upheld in all internal and external projects, programmes, and communications.
- Representing the BDA in a positive and professional manner, which promotes the visions, aims, and objectives of the organisation.
- Carry out any other duties that may reasonably be required from time to time.
- Excellent organisational skills and attention to detail, with the ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines.
- Confident in liaising with a range of stakeholders, including trustees, parliamentarians, civil servants, and sector partners.
- Excellent communication skills, with the ability to write clearly and persuasively for different audiences.
- Proactive and self-motivated, with a willingness to take initiative and work both independently and as part of a team.
- Discreet and professional when handling sensitive and confidential information.
- Strong IT skills, including Excel, Microsoft Office, and stakeholder database management (CRM systems).
- Self-disciplined and confident with a friendly and diplomatic manner.
- Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work well within a small team, as well as within the wider organisation.
- Good attention to detail; consistently produces accurate work, and identifies and corrects errors
- A flexible approach, with the ability to adapt to the needs of the organisation as well as unforeseen external developments.
- Experience in financial administration, especially with Xero.
- Experience supporting policy, public affairs, or campaign work in a charity, political, and public sector setting.
- Familiarity with current policy issues affecting people with dyslexia.
- Experience in event support or logistics for advocacy or parliamentary events.
- Knowledge of dyslexia and neurodiversity.
- Experience working within the charitable sector.
Working locations
- Hybrid model, working in theBracknell office and remotely
- Occasional travel is also required to attend team days, twice a year.
