Job summary

A well-established civil engineering contractor based in Derby is seeking an Estimator to join the pre-contract team. You will prepare tenders, gather data from sites, and coordinate with clients, designers and suppliers to deliver competitive bids. This role includes supervising junior staff and promoting professional development.

The position is full-time and based at the Derby office with flexible working arrangements and a clear path for career progression.

Qualifications

  • Proven experience estimating within groundworks, drainage, concrete structures and/or general civil engineering works.
  • Ability to estimate from first principles and develop accurate tenders.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications and data analysis.

  • Conduct site visits to assess conditions and gather data.
  • Liaise with clients, designers and internal teams to understand project requirements.
  • Obtain quotations from subcontractors and suppliers and ensure bid compliance.
  • Support contract handovers and maintain quality control during estimating.

Job description

You will be joining an award-winning and well-established civil engineering contractor based in Derby. This multi-accredited and leading contractor operates across the energy, commercial and industrial sectors, delivering projects valued up to £10m for an array of high-profile clients, and offers excellent opportunities for career progression and professional development. As part of their continued growth, they are actively seeking an experienced Estimator to join their pre-contract. This is an excellent opportunity to join a highly successful and growing principal contractor with a family-like feel.

This is a full-time permanent position based out of their Derby office with flexible working arrangements.

Working hours: 8:45am - 5:15pm (with a 1-hour lunch), Monday - Friday

Your new role

As Estimator, you will be responsible for preparing and submitting competitive tenders and budgets, ensuring accuracy and compliance with company standards and client requirements. You'll work closely with internal departments, subcontractors, and suppliers to gather essential data, assess project costs, and support the delivery of high-quality bids. You'll also supervise junior staff and contribute to their development.

  • Preparing detailed tenders and estimates in line with company procedures.
  • Conducting site visits to assess conditions and gather relevant data.
  • Liaising with clients, designers, and internal teams to understand project requirements.
  • Obtaining quotations from subcontractors and suppliers.
  • Ensuring compliance with health & safety legislation and company policies.
  • Supporting contract handovers and maintaining quality control throughout the estimating process.
  • Promoting positive client relationships and representing the company professionally.
What you'll need to succeed

In order to be successful, you must have:

  • Proven experience estimating within groundworks, drainage, concrete structures and/or general civil engineering works
  • Ability to estimate from first principles
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications
  • Sound numerical, analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Full UK driving licence.
