Job summary

PSR Solutions is seeking an experienced Estimator to join the Pre-Construction team in Birmingham. You will support the preparation of competitive tenders, develop accurate cost plans, and work with cross-functional teams to ensure commercially sound proposals.

The role requires strong Excel proficiency, understanding of tendering, and the ability to manage multiple bids in a fast-paced environment. A Tier 1/Tier 2 contracting background is advantageous.

Qualifications

• Experience as an Estimator for a Main Contractor (Tier 1 or 2 preferred).
• Strong knowledge of estimating principles and tendering processes.
• Excellent numerical, analytical, and problem-solving abilities.

Our client is an award-winning Tier 1 main contractor with an outstanding reputation for delivering high-quality projects across a range of sectors throughout the UK including education, commercial, leisure, healthcare, industrial and extra care. Due to continued growth and a strong pipeline of secured and upcoming work, they are looking to appoint an Estimator to join their established Pre-Construction team based in Birmingham.

The Role

As an Estimator, you will play a key role in the pre-construction function, supporting the preparation of competitive and profitable tenders for a diverse portfolio of projects. Working closely with commercial, design, planning, and operational teams, you will help develop accurate cost plans, identify opportunities to add value, and effectively manage risk throughout the tendering process.

This position offers the opportunity to contribute to major construction projects while building strong relationships with clients, consultants, subcontractors, and suppliers.

Key Responsibilities

• Prepare detailed and accurate cost estimates and tender submissions for construction projects.
• Analyse project documentation, specifications, drawings, and scope requirements to develop robust pricing strategies.
• Identify and mitigate commercial and delivery risks whilst maximising profitability.
• Develop and maintain strong relationships with clients, consultants, subcontractors, and supply chain partners throughout the tender process.
• Obtain and evaluate quotations from suppliers and subcontractors, negotiating competitive rates and favourable commercial terms.
• Support value engineering initiatives to deliver cost-effective and innovative solutions.
• Collaborate closely with design, planning, commercial, and operational teams to ensure coordinated bid submissions.
• Present tender information and recommendations to senior stakeholders when required.
• Participate in project handover meetings, ensuring a smooth transition from pre-construction to delivery teams.
• Maintain awareness of market conditions, labour trends, material costs, and industry developments.

Requirements

• Previous experience in an Estimator role working for a Main Contractor, ideally within a Tier 1 or Tier 2 environment.
• Strong understanding of construction estimating principles and tendering processes.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and estimating software packages.
• Excellent numerical, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
• High attention to detail with the ability to produce accurate and commercially sound estimates.
• Strong communication and relationship-building abilities.
• Ability to work effectively within a fast-paced environment and manage multiple tender submissions simultaneously.
• Knowledge of a variety of construction sectors would be advantageous.
