Job summary

List Recruitment in Grimsby is seeking an experienced Lead Estimator to join our fabrication team. This hands-on role leads a small estimating team and is responsible for producing accurate, competitive tenders for plating and structural steelwork fabrication and installation.

You will work closely with workshop and projects teams, review drawings and tender documents, and help manage pricing, risks, and delivery.

Qualifications

• Experience leading or mentoring estimators.
• Proven ability to price labour, materials and subcontract work.
• Strong understanding of plating and structural steelwork fabrication.
• Ability to read drawings and specifications to produce cost estimates.
• Good commercial awareness and tender delivery understanding.
• Knowledge of piping estimation (isometrics and take-offs).

Job description

We're working with a major international business in the energy and engineering sector to recruit an experienced Lead Estimator to join their fabrication team in Grimsby. This is a hands-on role leading a small estimating team, with responsibility for putting together accurate and competitive tenders for fabrication and installation projects. The main focus will be plating and structural steelwork, with some involvement in piping estimates. You'll work closely with the workshop, projects team and senior management to make sure estimates are accurate, commercially sound and realistic to deliver.

The Role

• Leading and supporting a small estimating team, allocating work and managing priorities.
• Preparing and reviewing detailed estimates for plating, structural steelwork fabrication and installation.
• Reviewing drawings, specifications and tender documents to establish the scope of work and identify any commercial risks.
• Calculating costs for labour, materials, equipment, subcontractors and site support.
• Obtaining and reviewing subcontractor quotations where work needs to be outsourced.
• Working with senior management on pricing, tender reviews and bid submissions.
• Liaising with the workshop and projects team to ensure estimates reflect how the work will be carried out.
• Visiting client sites where necessary to understand the scope of work.
• Supporting piping estimates when required, including reviewing drawings, specifications and material take-offs.
• Preparing tender documentation and ensuring successful bids are handed over properly to the delivery teams.
• Monitoring the estimating workload, reporting progress and running regular team meetings.

What We're Looking For

You'll need solid estimating experience within a fabrication or engineering environment, with a good understanding of the costs involved in taking work from tender through to delivery.

• Experience of leading or mentoring other estimators.
• Strong knowledge of plating and structural steelwork fabrication.
• The ability to read engineering drawings and specifications and turn these into accurate cost estimates.
• Experience pricing labour, materials, subcontract work and installation costs.
• Good commercial awareness and an understanding of tendering and project delivery.
• Some knowledge of piping estimating, including isometrics and material take-offs.
• Good communication and organisational skills, with the ability to manage several tenders at once.
• Good working knowledge of Microsoft Excel and Word.

Experience with estimating software and project planning would also be useful.
