Job summary

National Grid Electricity Distribution (NGED) is seeking an Estates Specialist to join the Telecoms Project Delivery Team in the East or West Midlands region. The role combines office and home working once training is complete, under a hybrid model.

You will negotiate consents and wayleaves for Telecoms assets, support site and route selection, liaise with local authorities, and ensure project compliance and safe operation of the electricity network.

Job description

An opportunity has become available for an Estates Specialist reporting to the Telecoms Project Delivery Team Manager with a base to be agreed within NGEDs East or West Midlands geographical operational area.

The Estates Specialist will be responsible for all permissions necessary for the development of the Telecoms and SCADA Network, including the provisions of a Consents and Wayleaves service in respect of project work.

Depending on experience, you may initially be appointed on a designate basis until all relevant courses and training are complete.

As part of our hybrid working approach this role offers a mix of office and home working. Hybrid working can only be considered once your initial training is complete and subject to business need.

Main Responsibilities

You’ll be responsible for managing your own time to achieve targets set by the business and our customers, working on the Telecoms & SCADA networks that primarily supports the remote Control and Visibility of the electricity network. You will:

• Negotiate consents, wayleaves, easements and agreements in respect of the location of works to Telecoms assets.
• Assist with Telecoms scheme preparation in terms of site and route selection/acquisition as necessary.
• Undertake major project planning applications and to be the point of contact with local authorities and other consultees/objectors.
• Provide advice to other teams within National Grid.
• To deal with wayleave terminations, primarily on the Telecoms Networks.
• To assist with the preparation of Company wayleave and consents policy.
• Report any accident, injury, damage to property or near miss.
• Issue work to contractors, and approve daily work sheets.
• Carry out quality and compliance checks on contractor’s works.
• Work with colleagues and customers to ensure a continuity of service.
• Work safely and in accordance with approved procedures and techniques.
• Provide technical support to colleagues to solve complex issues.

Ideal Candidate

You would ideally have experience in dealing with consent and wayleave issues together with a broad understanding of the legislation and regulations affecting consents and wayleaves.

Experience in both Telecoms and Electricity networks would be preferential. If you haven’t worked with us before, then you’ll have an appreciation of the electrical Network we support – perhaps you’ve worked in Safety Critical environments before.

Strong communication skills are key, so you can coordinate jobs and clearly explain issues. As you’ll be in control of your diary, we’ll need you to be resilient, organised and able to prioritise your workload. Team players thrive in this role, and you’ll have experience using iPads, computers and our additional software.

In addition, you should have a good knowledge and understanding of Company systems, processes and procedures. You should have proficient negotiation and influencing skills and must be able to demonstrate an ability to communicate effectively with customers, landowners and Local Authorities, as well as statutory consultees, objectors and other authorities.

You will need to be mobile throughout the area therefore a full drivers licence is essential for this role.
