Job Title – Established Engine Builder

Salary – competitive (depending on experience)

Reports to: Lead Engine Build Technical

Job Type – Permanent, Full-time

Location – Basildon, Essex, UK

The Company

Advanced Engine Research supply technologically advanced high-performance engine solutions to the automotive and motorsport industry. Through employment of the best engineers, the latest design tools and advanced electronic control systems, AER is a world leader in producing high performance, fuel efficient, low mass engines.

Since 1999, AER has powered teams to forty-three championships including two class victories at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, two at the 24 Hours of Daytona, three at the 12 Hours of Sebring and four at the ten-hour Petit Le Mans. AER has been the chosen engine supplier for numerous single make series including GP3, Indy Lights, World Series Light and World Series by Nissan. In addition to this, AER has a long history of providing technical assistance to automotive manufacturers and F1 engine suppliers.

The Opportunity

An established engine build technician is required to join the small, talented team of experienced engine builders at AER. In this combined practical and report writing based role, you will have the opportunity to make a real difference in supporting and learning about the build and maintenance of AER’s race engine products. You will be working as part of a team in the ‘Engine Buildshop’ assisting and guiding through all stages of the engine build process.

Tasks

  • To strip and inspect engines in a timely manner as required, making observations, identifying causes of failure through analysis and feeding back information to the Buildshop Technical Lead and to the design office. Using knowledge and experience to identify potential reliability critical issues
  • Committing to and delivering the quality, reliability and consistency of the engine build process. Working in close cooperation with the engine build team to ensure engines are built to a defined specification, that what is built and how it is built is consistent and working to a defined ‘best practice’ standard – with supporting documentation.
  • Ensure engine build documentation is followed and completed accurately and fully using our digital format (including SN’s properly recorded, engine spec sheets followed, engine strip sheets, PDI records and engine build sheet accuracy).
  • Competent in measuring, inspecting, and checking engine components on strip including documentation and report writing.
  • Complete, record and maintain accurate and consistent build records and component serial numbers.
  • Confident in following designated build manual/assembly drawings and process led assembly of development and race engines.
  • Support the Dyno team with engine pass off procedure, pre delivery inspections, engine install and removal from dyno and minor dyno and cooling tower maintenance.
  • Support and act upon requests as appropriate from stakeholders such as Design Engineers, Track Support Engineers and Engine Build Shop for interrogation of the LifeCheck database and laser part marking of components.
  • Careful cleaning, inspecting and preparation of engine components for further inspection and/or build.
  • As technical competence grows, you will be encouraged to show a willingness to highlight/raise any issues in the quest for resolution.
  • Responding to and fulfilling infrequent Fabrication requests until such time as demand becomes too great.

Key Skills / Experience

Essential:

  • Experienced Engine Builder
  • Familiarity with IC engines
  • Experience in working with race engines or aerospace
  • Interest in motorsport
  • Experience in a mechanical and practical based role.
  • Attention to detail both in engine building and report writing
  • Natural dexterity and deftness of hand
  • Understand importance of recording data for LifeCheck and build record systems.
  • Ability to work safely, and unsupervised, within a workshop environment to tight deadlines
  • Flexible to changing priorities, demonstrating a ‘can do’ attitude
  • Adaptable with a willingness to learn and determination to deliver
  • Demonstrates pride in their work to achieve exacting standards required.

Values & Behaviours

  • Honesty, openness, the ability to learn from faults and failures, to give and accept feedback, and have a high level of personal responsibility & accountability – these are most of the important qualities that will ultimately determine the individual candidate’s success or failure within AER.
  • Ability to work within a small team, to deliver as required to meet the needs of the business, and demanding nature of motor racing.
  • Someone that can identify their own personal success or achievement within a team result.
  • Someone that recognises the fact that their behaviours within a small team are key to their success, that asks for feedback and gives feedback, as part of their personal growth & development.
  • AER’s baseline assumption in hiring personnel, with limited experience is that they have the basic skillset and education to be successful. But the ability to translate their skills and education to ‘real-world’ problems, to achieve within a small team environment, and be successful as part of the team - is intrinsically linked to the values and behaviours outlined above.

Hours of work & Benefits

Standard full-time working week, 40 hours a week, 8 hours a day. When based at AER's Essex facility, standard office hours are flexible across core hours, providing for an early start if preferred. To meet the needs of the role and fast paced nature of the business, the successful candidate will require a flexible approach to working hours.

Application Process & Closing Date:

  • a copy of your CV
  • a brief covering email explaining why you are a suitable candidate for the role
  • current salary and salary expectations
  • availability to start / notice period
  • Closing date: Monday 7th July 2025
