Job summary

Quantum Scholars is seeking a patient and flexible SEND Science Tutor to provide ongoing one‑to‑one Science tuition for a Year 9 boy supported by EOTAS. Sessions are in-person, 2–3 hours weekly, across the school year, with a focus on building confidence and subject knowledge.

The tutor should tailor teaching to dyslexia, dyspraxia, ASD and demand-avoidant tendencies, allowing autonomy and aligning with the student’s interests. Initial focus on Biology, adaptable as needs evolve.

Qualifications

• Strong Science subject knowledge for Year 9 learners.
• Experience working with SEND students.
• Experience supporting ASD, dyslexia, dyspraxia and demand-avoidant profiles is desirable.

SEND Science Tutor – EOTAS Year 9 Student

Location: Herefordshire

Phase: Year 9 / SEND / EOTAS

Hours: 2-3 hours per week, ongoing for the full school year

Quantum Scholars are looking for a patient, flexible and experienced SEND Science Tutor to provide ongoing one-to-one Science tuition to a Year 9 boy accessing EOTAS provision.

The successful tutor will support the student with his Science learning throughout the full school year, helping him to build confidence, develop his subject knowledge and make progress towards his educational goals.

The student has dyslexia, dyspraxia, ASD and demand-avoidant tendencies, so it is important that the tutor is able to take a flexible, low-pressure and individualised approach to learning. He responds well to having a sense of autonomy, so allowing him to make choices about where to begin and incorporating his interests into sessions will be particularly important.

The initial focus is likely to include Biology, although the tutor should be prepared to follow the student’s interests and adapt the content according to his engagement and needs. He has also experienced some medical trauma in the past, so a sensitive and reassuring approach is important. He is comfortable with most Biology-related topics.

This is an in-person tutoring role and is not online work.

Potential Session Times

The requirement is for approximately 2-3 hours per week, which could potentially be arranged as two 1.5-hour sessions or a similar combination.

Sessions must be within a couple of the times below:

• Monday: 12:15pm-1:15pm
• Wednesday: 2:15pm-3:45pm
• Thursday: 12:00pm-1:00pm
• Friday: 11:00am-12:00pm
• Some availability may also be possible on Mondays and Tuesdays from 3:30pm onwards.

The Role May Involve

• Following the student’s interests where appropriate to encourage engagement and motivation.
• Initially exploring Biology as an area of interest and building learning from there.
• Adapting teaching methods, resources and expectations to support dyslexia, dyspraxia, ASD and demand-avoidant tendencies.
• Breaking down scientific concepts into manageable and accessible steps.
• Supporting the development of confidence, independence and positive attitudes towards Science.
• Creating a calm, supportive and predictable learning environment.
• Being sensitive to the student’s previous medical experiences and ensuring activities are approached appropriately.
• Monitoring progress and adapting tuition according to the student’s needs and interests.
• Providing appropriate feedback to parents/carers and other professionals involved in the student’s EOTAS provision.
• Building a positive and trusting relationship with the student.
• Maintaining professional boundaries and following safeguarding procedures.

Essential Requirements

• Strong Science subject knowledge with the ability to support a Year 9 learner.
• Experience working with children or young people with SEND.
• Experience supporting learners with ASD, dyslexia, dyspraxia and/or demand-avoidant profiles is highly desirable.
• Experience delivering one-to-one tuition or personalised educational support.
• Understanding of how to adapt learning for learners who may find traditional teaching approaches challenging.
• Patient, calm, flexible and empathetic approach.
• Ability to provide a low-pressure and supportive learning environment.
• Comfortable giving learners appropriate autonomy and choice within sessions.
• Creative and flexible approach to following a learner’s interests to encourage engagement.
• Strong relationship‑building and communication skills.
• Sensitive and reassuring approach when supporting a learner with previous medical trauma.
• Good organisational skills and ability to provide consistent weekly support.
