Job summary

Magnox (NRS) is seeking a highly skilled environmental permitting specialist to lead the development and submission of Environmental Permit applications for on‑site disposal as part of decommissioning and site restoration. You will define sustainable permitting approaches, collaborate with regulators and multi‑disciplinary teams, and help shape national thinking on nuclear site closure.

  • Degree (Level 6) in science, engineering or a related discipline.
  • Experience delivering environmental and human health risk assessments.
  • Knowledge of environmental transport models and approaches.

  • Knowledge of Radioactive Substances Regulation and related standards.

Responsibilities

  • Lead development and submission of Environmental Permit applications for on-site disposal as part of decommissioning and site restoration.

What will you be doing:

We’re searching for a highly skilled and knowledgeable individual to lead the development and submission of Environmental Permit applications that will enable on‑site disposal of radioactive waste and support decommissioning, site restoration and closure. This is a rare chance to define sustainable decommissioning approaches, collaborate with regulators and multi‑disciplinary teams, and influence national thinking on nuclear site restoration. You’ll also play an important role in wider NRS strategy work, including helping shape responses to Government consultations on nuclear site closure.

You will also

  • Lead the development of the Site‑Wide Environmental Safety Case, Waste Management Plan, and the technical and risk assessments underpinning optimised waste management solutions.
  • Produce high‑quality, robust Environmental Permit application(s) essential for permissioning site closure.
  • Build and maintain strong working relationships with regulators (EA, ONR) and manage interfaces with other permissioning regimes such as T&CPA and Licence Conditions.
  • Collaborate with decommissioning projects, technical specialists, contractors and stakeholders to ensure requirements are met and the final End State can be delivered effectively.
Who are we looking for

You’ll bring a strong academic foundation, supported by deep technical expertise in environmental permitting and safety cases. Your background will include significant experience delivering complex environmental and human health risk assessments, combined with a solid understanding of environmental modelling approaches and relevant national and international standards.

You will be:

  • Degree (Level 6) in science, engineering or a related discipline.
  • Experienced in managing production and technical oversight of environmental and human health risk assessments. Knowledge of environmental transport models and approaches.
  • Extensive experience in Environmental Safety Cases or Radioactive Substances Permitting and experience in managing interactions with Regulators to support Permit applications.
  • Experience in managing interfaces and interactions with regulators.
  • Knowledgeable on environmental issues including practices, policies, legislation and stakeholders relating to radioactive and non-radioactive waste management.
  • Detailed knowledge of the requirements of Radioactive Substances Regulation, GRR or GRA and relevant national and international standards.

In addition, it would be advantageous to have experience in managing contractors, undertaking technical assessments, including project reporting / accountability and knowledge of interfacing regulatory regimes including conventional waste, groundwater and Town and Country Planning Act.
