Job description

Looking for a role where you can work a full-time career in just four days a week while helping shape the future of one of the UK’s most significant nuclear decommissioning projects? At Berkeley Site, you’ll combine technical expertise with real-world impact, playing a key role in the safe management of radioactive and non‑active waste as a historic nuclear power station moves closer to its end goal of returning to greenfield status.

This is an opportunity to be part of something much bigger than a day-to-day technical role. You’ll join a supportive and highly skilled team tackling some of the most important environmental and decommissioning challenges in the nuclear industry. Your knowledge, judgement and ideas will directly influence how waste is managed, transported and reduced, helping protect the environment while supporting the successful delivery of major site projects. And with a four-day working week from Monday to Thursday, you’ll have an extra day every week to focus on what matters most outside of work.

What You Will Be Doing

You’ll play a central role in guiding decommissioning programmes through waste and transport legislation. Your advice will shape decisions across the site, ensuring waste is handled safely, compliantly and with the environment in mind. You’ll also help develop and refine waste strategies, supporting the teams who manage both radioactive and non‑active waste movements.

Alongside this, you’ll provide technical support to a wide range of projects — from early design through to implementation. You’ll help define what good waste management looks like, encourage continuous improvement and build trust with internal and external stakeholders who rely on your technical judgement. All of this is delivered through a full-time role structured across just four days each week, giving you an additional day to do what matters most outside of work.

Key areas you’ll influence:

  • Advising on waste and dangerous goods legislation for decommissioning activities.
  • Leading Best Available Technique assessments to reduce waste generation and environmental impact.
  • Providing clear technical guidance to project teams.
  • Supporting the safe consignment of radioactive and non‑active wastes from site.
Who are we looking for?

You’ll bring solid technical grounding and practical experience in nuclear waste management. You understand environmental and legislative requirements and know how to help teams apply them in a safe and efficient way. A background in the nuclear industry is essential, ideally with hands‑on involvement in waste operations or waste inventory work.

You’ll be comfortable engaging with people at all levels — clear in your advice, approachable in your style and focused on delivering sensible, compliant solutions.

You’ll need:

  • An HNC or equivalent qualification in a scientific, engineering or environmental discipline.
  • Strong knowledge of environmental and waste‑related legislation, including radioactive and controlled wastes.
  • Experience in nuclear waste management and working within regulated environments.
  • (Desirable) Dangerous Goods Safety Advisor certification and experience developing waste inventories.

We also welcome applications from those looking to develop and may not meet all essential criteria. In these cases, a lower grade may be offered as a development opportunity. The successful candidate would be supported with a Personal Development Plan (PDP) to enable progression into the role.
