Job description

  • Degree Qualified (or experience equivalent to a degree).
  • Full Member of a professional institution (e.g., IEMA, IES, CIWEM, CIEEM). Relevant Chartered status.
  • Full driving licence and willing to travel.
  • DBS check will be required prior to appointment.
  • Significant environmental management experience in the construction industry on large infrastructure projects or equivalent, comparable industry/projects (over 7 years).
  • Chartered Environmentalist.
  • An EUSR (water hygiene) blue card (can be obtained in role).
  • Experience of tunnelling.
STRABAG - More than just a construction company

Reporting to the Haweswater Aqueduct Resilience Programme (HARP) Project directorate and the Senior Environment and Sustainability Manager, the main purpose of the role is to –

  • Lead on all environment aspects of STRABAG work on the HARP Project and the wider business (where required) in line with the STRABAG management system, the STRABAG Environment and Sustainability Strategy, and the wider HARP project requirements.
  • Ensure that the STRABAG ISO 14001 compliant Environmental and Sustainability Management System (ESMS) is fully implemented on the project.
  • Build a strong, efficient environmental management team which reflects STRABAG’s team working culture to support the HARP project.
  • Advise and support the project directorate and management team in discharging their responsibilities towards the environment and sustainability.
  • Manage STRABAG’s ISO 14001 compliant ESMS for the project, and lead site activities to support the implementation of STRABAG’s ISO 50001 compliant Energy Management System and development of our PAS 2080 compliant Carbon Management System and ISO 46001 compliant Water Efficiency Management System. Support the client implementation of their management systems as required.
  • Manage and undertake regular environmental assurance activity to monitor compliance with environmental legislation, STRABAG environmental procedures, and client management plans. This may initially include some environmental monitoring, sampling, and data analysis to inform the operation of environmental controls.
  • Be responsible for maintenance of records to support compliance with legislation, STRABAG requirements, and client requirements. Gather, compile, and report upon project-specific information in line with STRABAG KPIs and the ESMS, including information required to fulfill various ISO certification requirements. Review trends, develop improvement initiatives, and implement as required.
  • Support the project team in the correct management of waste, identifying efficient waste segregation, determining preferred waste management options in line with the waste hierarchy, and managing a programme of Duty of Care compliance audits.
  • Manage and undertake due-diligence reviews of project information, identifying necessary permitting and consenting requirements and developing plans to deliver them. Manage the contribution of external consultants where required.
  • Actively work with the project supply chain and procurement team to ensure that contractual requirements regarding environmental standards and adherence are maintained. Manage a programme of supplier audits in accordance with STRABAG’s management systems and sustainable procurement policies.
  • Lead the investigation of environmental incidents, dangerous occurrences, and near misses and support other teams in the investigation of other incidents as requested.
  • Lead for the project in the development and management of environmental stakeholder relations, attending local stakeholder and regulatory meetings as requested by the client.
  • Recruit, develop, upskill, mentor, and manage new project Environment team members as the scope of our work develops. Lead by example. Make sure of high quality in their work and ensure that their health, safety, and welfare are appropriately managed.
  • Take a leading role in collaboration within the wider national and international STRABAG Environment and Sustainability function and other teams within the organisation. This may include occasional travel to other STRABAG sites. Dedicate time to project visits, inspections, sharing best practice, upskilling, and educating other project teams.
  • Support the Director of Environment & Sustainability and the wider STRABAG business when required in knowledge sharing, bid support, strategy support, etc.
  • Participate in industry working groups and forums as required.
