What matters to us
- Degree qualified (or equivalent experience).
- Full member of a professional institution (e.g., IEMA, IES, CIWEM, CIEEM). Relevant Chartered status.
- Full driving license and willingness to travel.
- DBS check required prior to appointment.
- Significant environmental management experience in the construction industry on large infrastructure projects (over 7 years).
- Chartered Environmentalist.
- An EUSR (water hygiene) blue card (can be obtained during the role).
- Experience in tunnelling.
Your contribution to our company
Reporting to the Haweswater Aqueduct Resilience Programme (HARP) Project Director and the Senior Environment and Sustainability Manager, the main purpose of the role is to:
- Lead all environmental aspects of STRABAG’s work on the HARP Project and wider business in line with management systems, environmental and sustainability strategies, and project requirements.
- Ensure full implementation of the ISO 14001 compliant Environmental and Sustainability Management System (ESMS) on the project.
- Build a strong, efficient environmental management team that reflects STRABAG’s team culture to support the HARP project.
- Advise and support the project directorate and management team regarding environmental and sustainability responsibilities.
- Manage the ESMS and support the implementation of ISO 50001 Energy Management System, PAS 2080 Carbon Management System, and ISO 46001 Water Efficiency Management System, including supporting client implementation.
- Manage communication and risk regarding environmental requirements, ensuring statutory duties and responsibilities are understood through briefings and site presence.
- Lead development of project-specific management plans, risk assessments, and method statements.
- Conduct environmental assurance activities, monitoring compliance, and supporting environmental controls with sampling and data analysis.
- Maintain records to demonstrate compliance with legislation, company, and client requirements, and report on KPIs and certifications.
- Support waste management practices, including waste segregation, management options, and Duty of Care audits.
- Review project information for permitting and consenting requirements, managing external consultants as needed.
- Work with supply chain and procurement to ensure environmental standards are met, including supplier audits.
- Lead investigations of environmental incidents and support other incident investigations.
- Develop and manage stakeholder relations, attending meetings with local stakeholders and regulators.
- Recruit, develop, mentor, and manage the environmental team, ensuring high-quality work and safety.
- Collaborate within the wider organization, participate in industry forums, and travel for site inspections and best practice sharing.
- Support knowledge sharing, bid support, and strategy development as required.
