Environmental Manager

Location: Carlisle

Salary: £55,000 - £67,000 plus car / car allowance and package negotiable depending on experience and expertise.

Summary

An opportunity has arisen for an Environmental Manager to work on a £250 million substation project based in Carlisle. The project is a joint venture with two of the UK's leading civil engineering and energy companies, supporting the replacement of major infrastructure to increase capacity. Works include earthworks, roads, drainage, concrete structures, and piling, followed by fit-out works.

The role is site-based with one day a week working from home. Full accommodation and subsistence will be provided on-site if daily travel is not feasible. Reporting to the Project Director, the Environmental Manager will lead the implementation and management of environmental practices, fostering a culture of best practices and high standards across civils work on the substation.

Responsibilities

1. Initiate and maintain systems to monitor compliance with BS EN ISO 14001 and other standards.
2. Manage monitoring equipment, collect, process, and interpret environmental data (water, dust, noise, waste).
3. Conduct onsite environmental inspections, highlighting good and bad practices to teams and senior management.
4. Ensure the Environmental Management System is implemented and maintained through regular checks and audits.
5. Record and report incidents, implementing corrective actions as needed.
6. Prepare monthly environmental reports, including data for company, client, and divisional systems.
7. Report progress and achievements related to environmental compliance and targets.
8. Develop mitigation measures for environmental risks in collaboration with the production team.
9. Review and update the Environmental Management Plan and associated documents regularly.
10. Build and maintain relationships with stakeholders and client representatives for collaborative working.

Person Specification

1. Significant experience with a consulting engineer, civil contractor, or environmental specialist.
2. Bachelor's degree or MSc in a relevant environmental discipline.
3. Broad knowledge of environmental design, impacts, and legislation in the UK.
4. Member of IEMA, ideally chartered or working towards chartered status.
