Job summary

The Falkirk Mining Company is offering an internship for Environmental Science, Wildlife, or Biology students. The role combines fieldwork and office tasks to benefit the operation, including vegetation mapping and wildlife monitoring on and around reclaimed areas.

Interns will gain exposure to data reporting, water sampling, and map production with AutoCAD, while meeting MSHA safety requirements and completing required tests. Housing stipend is provided along with standard benefits.

Qualifications

• Enrolled in accredited engineering/surveying program and in good academic standing.
• Completed a portion of college in the associated field and intents on completing the degree.
• Must have a valid driver's license.
• Able to work outdoors in extreme weather conditions.
• Must pass MVR check and Job Function Test (JFT).

Responsibilities

• Vegetation assessment and mapping on reclaimed wetlands and shelterbelts.
• Wildlife monitoring on pre-mine and post-mine areas.
• Compile written and tabular data monitoring reports for wildlife agencies.
• Ground/surface water monitoring and sampling.
• Assist survey crew with fieldwork and computations.
• Produce and modify mine site maps using AutoCAD.
• Escort contractors to spray noxious weeds.
• Comply with MSHA and company safety procedures and regulations.

Job description

This program is designed for students currently pursuing a two- or four-year degree, who have completed a portion of their curriculum, and will be completing their program after the internship experience. It is not designed for graduates. Falkirk looks at this position as an opportunity to expose an Environmental Science, Wildlife, or Biology student to a varied field and office experience. At the same time Falkirk will utilize the individual time to accomplish tasks that will benefit the operation. The successful applicant will require knowledge of plant/wildlife identification and the use of taxonomic keys. They should have strong computer skills (experience with Microsoft Office and AutoCAD are a plus).

3-month position (May 2027 through August 2027) 8-month position (May 2027 through December 2027)

Duties / Tasks:

• Vegetation assessment and mapping on reclaimed wetlands and shelterbelts.
• Wildlife monitoring on pre-mine and post-mine areas.
• Compile written and tabular data monitoring reports as required by state and federal wildlife agencies.
• Ground/Surface Water Monitoring - assist with recording levels and sampling water from several ground/surface water monitoring sites located within the vicinity of the mine.
• Assist the survey crew with fieldwork and office computations.
• Working with various forms of mine data to produce reports or studies.
• Soil Sampling and Probing - assist mine site employees with on-going soil probing and collection of soil samples.
• Produce and modify mine site maps with the use of computer program AutoCAD.
• Escort contractor around mine site to spray noxious weeds.
• Perform job duties in accordance with MSHA law and regulations, established company safety procedures, and state and federal environmental regulations.

Qualifications:

• Required Enrolled in accredited engineering/surveying program and in good academic standing with the college or university.
• Completed a portion of college in the associated field of study and intents on completing the degree.
• Applicants need to have a valid driver's license
• Able to work outdoors in extreme weather conditions
• Must also successfully pass a Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) check and the applicable Job Function Test (JFT).

Starting Salary: $25.88 - $29.11 (Hourly)

ANALYSIS OF PHYSICAL DEMANDS FOR POSITION: Intermittent: None Occasionally (0 -1/3 of workday): Climbing stairs, and lowered work/standing. Frequently (1/3 - 2/3 of workday): Sitting, walking floor to waist lift (35 lbs.), waist to eye lift (35 lbs.), bilaterial carry (35 lbs.), unilateral carry (35 lbs.), and push and pull (35 lbs.) Continually (2/3-3/3 of workday): none NOTE: This position requires working rotating shifts. The role involves approximately 80% indoor work and 20% outdoor work. Employees must be able to work while wearing required personal protective equipment (PPE), including but not limited to steel-toe boots, safety glasses, a hard hat, face shield, and respirator. Must also successfully pass a Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) check and the applicable Job Function Test (JFT).
