Environmental Health Officer / Graduate Trainee (Environmental Protection)

Salary Grade 8 – Environmental Health Officer (£41,511 - £44,711)

Salary Career Grade 6-7 Trainee /Graduate (£34,314 - £40,476)

We are seeking a flexible, self-motivated, and enthusiastic Environmental Health Officer with a passion for improving public health and protecting the environment.

The successful applicant will need to have a ‘can do’ attitude to work, be self-motivated, flexible, take responsibility for a varied workload, be an effective communicator, committed to team working, and willing to deliver exceptional customer service.

You will work within our small multidisciplinary team that predominantly covers the regulatory areas of Environmental Protection and Private Sector Housing enforcement. Experience across both disciplines is not essential for the role. You will also be required to prepare reports, consider, and carry out enforcement action, including recommendations for legal proceedings where appropriate, and ensure that records and electronic filing systems are fully maintained and updated.

The role will suit a qualified and registered Environmental Health Practitioner. However, applications are also encouraged from graduates or undergraduates expecting to leave university in 2025. Uttlesford District Council is keen to support talented, aspiring graduates with the right skill set ready to embark on a career in Environmental Health. Support to achieve fully qualified and professional status will be provided as part of a career progression scheme.

A full driving licence and access to a car for work are essential for the Graduate and EHO posts. Trainee applicants who do not possess a full driver’s licence and vehicle will be placed on a temporary contract and expected to pass their test within 9 months.

From time to time, there will be a requirement for some out-of-hours working.

Environmental Protection Officer

Salary Career Grade 5-6 £30,559 - £37,035 (pay award pending)

We are seeking an enthusiastic officer with a passion for protecting the environment to join our multidisciplinary Environmental Health (Protection) Service. The successful candidate will deliver a range of investigations, including nuisance, fly tipping, abandoned vehicles, and other environmental crimes. You will also support the investigatory work of colleagues.

In carrying out these duties, you will collect evidence, prepare witness statements, interview suspects, develop case files, and give evidence in court. Other enforcement duties will include issuing penalty and other statutory notices.

You will need to be a team player with good interpersonal skills and a willingness to support colleagues. You must also have a ‘can do’ attitude, be self-motivated, flexible, and responsible for a varied workload.

A full driving licence and a car are essential for this post. From time to time, there will be a requirement for some out-of-hours working.

Private Sector Housing Officer

Salary Career Grade 5-6 £30,559 - £37,035 (pay award pending)

We are seeking a flexible, self-motivated, and enthusiastic officer to join our small multidisciplinary Environmental Health (Protection) Team.

The team handles responsibilities for Private Sector Housing Enforcement and consists of a small group passionate about improving conditions in the private rented sector. You will inspect residential properties and take advisory and enforcement actions to ensure landlords meet statutory requirements. You will also prepare reports, consider, and carry out enforcement actions, including recommendations for legal proceedings where appropriate, and ensure records and electronic filing systems are fully maintained and updated.

The role will suit a qualified or experienced officer; however, Uttlesford District Council is eager to support talented, aspiring applicants from backgrounds in housing or enforcement. Support to achieve qualifications in Private Sector Housing will be provided as part of a career progression scheme.
