Manchester City Council seeks an enthusiastic English Lecturer to plan, deliver and assess part-time adult courses across Manchester. The role involves online and centre-based teaching, including evening classes, to support learners in achieving qualifications.

You will work with a supportive MAES team to maintain high teaching standards, contribute to curriculum development, and participate in safeguarding and quality assurance activities.

About The Role

Working Hours & Contract Type: 22.2 Hours per week, Permanent

Interview Method: Face to Face, successful candidate will be invited for an assessment on October 20th at Greenheys Adult Learning Centre, Upper Lloyd Street, Manchester, M14 4HZ.

Manchester Adult Education has an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic and motivating English Lecturer to join our team. The role will involve the planning, delivery and assessment of part-time adult courses.

These courses include:
  • Functional Skills/Awards (Entry Level to Level 2)
  • GCSE
  • Booster /Support classes
  • Grammar support
  • Delivering functional skills for ESOL learners
Key responsibilities:
  • To teach online lessons (where appropriate) as well as teaching in our centres across the city as needed, this may involve evening classes
  • To deliver teaching and learning to at least a consistently good or outstanding standard
  • To assess learners and work accurately against appropriate awarding body criteria/key course targets to ensure learners achieve their qualifications/course goals.
  • To comply with safeguarding procedures.
  • To take course leadership responsibilities (where applicable)
  • To take part in team meetings and working groups
  • To ensure close liaison and good communications with other staff in matters concerning learners.
  • To comply with the service quality assurance procedures.
  • To comply with the service policies and procedures including maintaining records on learners including attendance and achievement.
  • To take personal and professional responsibility for keeping up to date in the subject area and administration processes.
  • To positively represent the MAES both internally and externally at all times.

You will be joining a committed and supportive team of teachers who are passionate about supporting adult learners in the community to improve their English and/or maths skills to secure employment, advance to higher education and achieve their full potential.

About the Candidate

We are looking for candidates who can inspire adult learners to develop their skills and aspirations to enable learners to improve employment opportunities, confidence, health or helping their families.

Have a track record of successfully delivering English courses to varying skills and knowledge levels including learners with additional needs.

Ideally, you will have experience of teaching adult learners and candidates are expected to have maintained their competency in a recent teaching role. However, we welcome applications from newly and recently qualified teachers, as well as established teachers.

You should be able to demonstrate:
  • Professional and academic competence/qualifications to teach on the courses.
  • Experience of adopting a range of teaching and learning strategies both face to face and online.
  • Use of e-learning platforms such as Google Classroom and others (e.g. BKSB) or the willingness to learn.
  • Commitment to develop your professional development
  • A flexible approach, coupled with excellent organisational and interpersonal skills.
  • The ability to engage and develop adult learners, and role model the attributes that we develop within our learners.
  • Hold GCSE A* - C / 9 - 4 in English or equivalent (essential)
  • Hold GCSE A* - C / 9 - 4 in Maths or equivalent (essential)
  • Hold a teaching qualification, ideally to Level 5 (subject specialism) or willingness to work towards this qualification
