Job summary

Quantum Scholars is seeking a patient, experienced English SEND Tutor to provide personalised one-to-one tuition to a secondary-aged learner in Wokingham, Berkshire. Your strong English knowledge and SEND/SEMH experience will help the learner make progress in literacy and confidence.

This is an in-person role; you will adapt pace, resources and teaching strategies to meet needs, build trust with carers, monitor progress and provide constructive feedback.

English SEND Tutor - Wokingham

Quantum Scholars is looking for a patient, supportive and experienced English SEND Tutor to provide personalised one-to-one tuition to a secondary-aged young person in Wokingham.

The successful tutor will have strong English subject knowledge and experience supporting learners with SEND and or SEMH needs. You will be confident adapting your teaching style, pace, resources and explanations to meet individual needs, while helping the learner build confidence and make positive academic progress.

Experience supporting young people with anxiety, school avoidance, disengagement or challenging behaviour would be highly desirable. The ability to create a calm, structured and supportive learning environment will be essential.

This is an in-person tutoring role and is not online work.

The role may involve

• Providing personalised one-to-one English tuition to a secondary-aged learner.
• Supporting a young person with SEND and/or SEMH needs.
• Supporting the secondary English curriculum and GCSE preparation where appropriate.
• Developing skills in reading, writing, comprehension, analysis and communication.
• Supporting GCSE English Language and/or English Literature where appropriate.
• Adapting lessons, resources and teaching approaches to meet individual needs.
• Breaking complex topics and tasks into manageable and accessible steps.
• Identifying gaps in learning and providing targeted support.
• Supporting GCSE revision, exam preparation and exam technique.
• Developing confidence in extended writing, comprehension and analytical responses.
• Supporting a learner who may experience anxiety, school avoidance or disengagement.
• Creating a calm, structured and positive learning environment.
• Using engaging activities and the learner's interests to encourage participation.
• Supporting learners who may display challenging behaviour where appropriate.
• Developing independence, resilience and positive attitudes towards learning.
• Monitoring progress and providing appropriate feedback.
• Building a positive and trusting relationship with the young person.
• Working collaboratively with parents/carers and other professionals involved in the learner's support.
• Maintaining professional boundaries and confidentiality.

Essential requirements

• Strong English subject knowledge at secondary/GCSE level.
• Experience teaching or tutoring English.
• Experience working with secondary-aged children or young people with SEND and/or SEMH needs.
• Experience providing one-to-one educational support.
• Ability to adapt teaching approaches to meet individual SEND needs.
• Experience supporting learners who may have barriers to accessing mainstream education.
• Experience supporting challenging behaviour would be highly desirable.
• A patient, calm, flexible and empathetic approach.
• Ability to build trusting and respectful relationships with young people.
• Experience supporting learners who may be reluctant, anxious or disengaged from education.
• Strong communication and organisational skills.
• Ability to maintain clear professional boundaries.
