English as a Second Language (ESL) Teacher
General Responsibilities
  • Plan, organize, and provide instruction in English that meets state and federal standards.
  • Coach and assist content teachers to achieve instructional objectives.
  • Assist special population students with achieving established goals.
  • Assist school staff with communication between school and home.
  • Prepare and maintain files and records.
Essential Tasks
  • Provide instruction consistent with the district/school instructional program to ensure students meet and exceed learning targets.
  • Develop and deliver lesson plans that utilize a broad range of appropriate teaching techniques and strategies.
  • Adapt curriculum for individual, small group, and remedial instruction to meet the needs of individual students and subgroups.
  • Maintain complete and accurate records of student progress and evidence of growth.
  • Assist teachers with instructional activities.
  • Reinforce material already presented through special efforts and repetitions; prepare and maintain files and reports.
  • Assist classroom teachers in performing specific duties or undertaking specialized tasks.
  • Provide individual and small‑group instruction to adapt the curriculum to pupils' intellectual abilities.
  • Prepare instructional materials and read to students.
  • Create an environment conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interests of the students.
  • Help plan daily and long‑range lessons and classroom activities.
  • Instruct students on use of computer software and prepare lesson plans.
  • Help students with problem solving and language skills.
  • Alert the teacher to special needs of individual students.
  • Administer academic and language assessments to evaluate student progress toward academic learning targets and progress in language acquisition.
  • Score required tests for reading and mathematics and enter data into the computer.
  • Check students' work for compliance with teacher's instructions.
  • Assist students with reading, spelling, and handwriting skills.
  • Maintain individual records for each student.
  • Collect and display suitable material for educational displays; prepare displays and decorate classroom.
  • Takes all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
  • Assist in implementing policies and rules governing student life and conduct.
  • Maintain order in the classroom and monitor students to keep them on tasks.
  • Perform related tasks as required.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

General knowledge of the practices, methods and techniques used in classroom teaching; ability to maintain confidential files and information and to compile reports; ability to deal effectively with students and teachers; skill in the use of classroom and instructional equipment; ability to operate standard office, word and data processing equipment; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with teachers, parents, students, and associates. Spanish as native/second language preferred.

Education and Experience

Minimum requirements include a bachelor's degree from an accredited institution. Eligible for Virginia Endorsement in English as a Second Language. Experience working with children is preferred. Experience working with ESL students and parents is a must.
