Job description

Job Description
Your new company

We are looking for a practical, hands-on Engineering Technician to join a busy port operation, supporting the safe, reliable and efficient running of key operational equipment and site facilities. The role will involve planned and reactive maintenance, fault-finding and repairs across cranes, gates, mechanical systems and general facilities, helping to keep the port operational around the clock. This is a varied role suited to someone with a strong mechanical engineering background and some electrical ability, or an electrical technician with sound mechanical experience. You will be working as part of a shift-based engineering team in a fast-paced industrial environment where safety, reliability and quick response times are essential.

  • Carry out planned preventative maintenance, inspections and servicing on port equipment, including cranes, gates, barriers and associated mechanical and electrical systems.
  • Respond promptly to breakdowns, faults and operational issues, diagnosing problems and carrying out effective repairs to minimise disruption to port activities.
  • Support the maintenance and repair of site facilities, including lighting, doors, water systems, small plant, fixtures and general building services.
  • Assist with the safe operation, preparation and availability of port infrastructure and equipment to support vessel, cargo and site operations.
  • Undertake mechanical repairs, adjustments and replacement of components such as gearboxes, bearings, motors, hydraulics, pumps, valves and drive systems.
  • Carry out basic electrical fault-finding and repairs within competency, escalating specialist electrical issues where required.
  • Complete routine checks, maintenance records, permits and job sheets accurately and in line with company procedures.
  • Work safely at all times, following health, safety and environmental procedures, risk assessments, method statements and permit-to-work systems.
What you’ll need to succeed
  • NVQ Level 3, City & Guilds, apprenticeship or equivalent qualification in Mechanical Engineering, Engineering Maintenance or a closely related discipline.
  • Strong mechanical maintenance and repair skills, ideally gained in a port, heavy industrial, manufacturing, marine, logistics, materials handling or similar environment.
  • Some electrical ability, including basic fault-finding, understanding of motors, sensors, controls or low-voltage systems.
  • Alternatively, an electrical qualification or background with proven mechanical maintenance experience will be considered.
  • Experience working on heavy plant, cranes, lifting equipment, gates, barriers, hydraulics, drives, pumps, motors or similar industrial equipment would be highly advantageous.
  • Good fault-finding skills with the ability to work logically under pressure in a live operational environment.
What you’ll get in return

A competitive salary starting at £42+ plus shift allowance, regular overtime, enhanced pension scheme, holiday increasing with service, sick pay scheme. Dedicated training and development plan for long-term career development.
