Job summary

Softcat is seeking a senior software engineer/technical lead to help shape and mature our internal technology practices. The role emphasizes hands-on coding, architecture decisions, and mentoring within an Agile squad.

You will work in a hybrid environment across multiple UK offices, contributing to cloud-based architectures and cross-functional delivery while supporting junior engineers and driving quality standards.

Qualifications

• 7+ years of hands-on software development experience at Senior Engineer or Technical Lead level.
• Strong commercial experience with .NET Core, C#, and SQL.
• Experience designing distributed systems and modern application architectures.
• Comfortable in Agile/squad-based environments and influencing delivery.
• Experience with cloud platforms (Azure and/or AWS) and Git version control.

Responsibilities

• Help build standards and drive a whole-team approach to quality.
• Lead from the codebase by contributing high-quality production code, refactoring where necessary, and solving complex technical problems.
• Set technical direction through architectural decisions, patterns, and pragmatic trade-offs.
• Mentor engineers through pairing, code reviews, and design discussions, focused on engineering excellence.
• Raise the capability of the squad by supporting and developing junior engineers.
• Ensure the team can deliver effectively by breaking down work, removing blockers, and delivering consistently.

Requirements:

• 7+ years of hands-on software development experience, operating at Senior Engineer or Technical Lead level
• Strong commercial experience with .NET Core, C#, and SQL
• Proven ability to design and reason about distributed systems and modern application architectures
• Comfortable working in Agile / squad-based environments, influencing delivery without formal authority
• Solid experience with cloud platforms (Azure and/or AWS) and version control (Git)
