Job summary

Altus Group is seeking a hands-on Tech Lead to drive AWS-native platforms and act as a senior technical voice. You will own system design and mentor engineers across Product, Engineering, and Architecture teams.

You will need deep cloud experience, proficiency in Python/Java/Node.js, Terraform, and strong CI/CD and testing practices, in a hybrid London/Manchester setup.

Qualifications

• Proven Tech Lead, Staff Engineer, or Senior Engineer with production ownership.
• Strong hands-on AWS and cloud-native architecture expertise.
• Proficiency in Python, Java, or Node.js.

Responsibilities

• Own system design for complex, high-impact initiatives from analysis through implementation.
• End-to-end ownership of mission-critical services ensuring reliability and scalability.
• Design cost-efficient, cloud-native solutions and manage technical debt.
• Lead code reviews, design docs, and retrospectives; mentor engineers.
• Drive CI/CD pipelines, testing, observability, and security improvements.

Salary: £50,000 - 90,000 per year

Requirements:

• We are looking for a proven Tech Lead, Staff Engineer, or Senior Engineer with experience owning complex systems in production.
• We need strong hands-on AWS experience and cloud-native architecture expertise.
• We require proficiency in at least one modern programming language such as Python, Java, or Node.js.
• We expect a deep understanding of system design, distributed systems, scalability, APIs, and data modeling.
• We need experience with Infrastructure as Code, such as Terraform or a similar tool.
• We value strong CI/CD and observability experience.
• We require experience implementing robust testing strategies.
• We are looking for someone comfortable working cross-functionally in Agile environments.
• We need strong communication skills and the ability to operate effectively in ambiguous situations.

Responsibilities:

• We own system design for complex, high-impact initiatives from analysis through implementation.
• We take end-to-end ownership of mission-critical services, ensuring reliability, scalability, and long-term sustainability.
• We manage and reduce technical debt strategically.
• We design cost-efficient, cloud-native solutions.
• We set and uphold standards for code quality, testing, observability, security, and documentation.
• We champion automated testing and shift-left quality practices.
• We promote DevSecOps principles to embed security and compliance into development.
• We lead through thorough code reviews, design documentation, and retrospectives.
• We drive delivery of complex, multi-phase initiatives.
• We partner with Engineering Managers, Product Managers, and Architects to shape the technical roadmap.
• We translate business requirements into scalable technical solutions.
• We identify risks early and proactively remove blockers.
• We build and evolve AWS-based, cloud-native systems including Lambda, ECS, RDS, S3, SQS, API Gateway, and CloudWatch.
• We own both application code and infrastructure, including Infrastructure as Code.
• We design and maintain CI/CD pipelines for reliable deployments.
• We support incident response and continuous reliability improvements.
• We provide technical mentorship and architectural guidance.
• We support hiring and onboarding of engineers.
• We encourage thoughtful adoption of AI-assisted development tools.
