Job summary

National Gas is seeking a senior leader to provide engineering policy, asset management, and second-line support for rotating machinery, compressor controls and instrumentation across the National Transmission System. You will ensure standards, governance and OEM management underpin safe, reliable operations.

Role requires delivery of robust asset strategies, investment delivery and compliance across cross-border projects spanning England and Scotland, with England-based team delivery.

Working pattern: Hybrid, with a minimum of 3 days a week on site

Travel: Regular travel across the project, stakeholder, and office locations as required

Location requirement: Candidates can be based from any of the listed office locations. The role supports a cross-border project spanning England and Scotland, with the majority of the delivery team based in England.

About The Role

To provide leadership for specialist engineering policy, asset management and second line engineering support across rotating machinery, compressor control and instrumentation assets.

The role ensures that standards, asset strategies, technical governance, OEM/service bulletin management and assurance activities are maintained and improved to support safe, reliable, compliant and efficient operation of the National Transmission System.

What You'll Do

• Provide Engineering & Asset Management services for rotating machinery and control assets, including second line operational support, investment and project support, asset health and system scoping, standards ownership, innovation transition into BAU, technical assurance and compliance activities.
• Where support is provided by third parties, ensure requirements are clearly defined, governed and managed through appropriate agreements.
• Establish clear reporting and performance management for key asset management services, including service levels, action tracking, evidence of closure and escalation routes for safety, compliance, reliability or availability risks.
• Lead or support the development and implementation of change programmes affecting compressor assets, control systems, remote monitoring, connected systems and asset data, ensuring policy, standards and technical requirements are embedded into delivery and BAU ownership.
• Where directly accountable for Opex or Capex expenditure, establish robust phasing, forecasting, governance and value controls to support delivery of agreed investment outcomes and annual budgets.
• Act as accountable manager for rotating machinery and compressor control assets, working with OEMs, specialist contractors, project teams and operational stakeholders to maintain safe and compliant asset performance.
• Oversee the management of OEM service bulletins, including capture, classification, applicability assessment, safety and availability screening, accountable action tracking, closure evidence and escalation of residual risk.
• Lead the review, ownership transfer and improvement of rotating machinery and control policies, standards and work procedures, ensuring document ownership, SME responsibilities and implementation routes are clear.
• Provide leadership across compressor asset health themes, including cab ventilation, fuel gas, gas generator systems, compressor auxiliary systems, control and instrumentation, remote monitoring and operational risk assessment interfaces.
• Coordinate technical input into major programmes, including control system replacement, Avon DLE/MCPD position development, ALERT/remote monitoring, OSS and connected system interfaces where these affect compressor operation, compliance or assurance.
• Manage team members who are SMEs for control, instrumentation and rotating machinery, responsible for asset and system strategy, asset health work scoping, ORAM support, standards updates, technical queries and deviations, quality assurance, compliance, operational support, investment delivery and regulatory funding.

About You

• Able to demonstrate capability in National Gas leadership qualities, including delivery through ambiguity, coaching and challenge, customer focus and performance excellence.
• Strong understanding of gas transmission operations, compressor stations and associated rotating machinery, control and instrumentation assets.
• Experience of operational or technical asset management in a gas transmission, utilities, petrochemical or comparable high-hazard environment.
• Experience of relevant engineering codes, standards, regulatory expectations and asset management practices, with the ability to determine proportionate engineering solutions to asset issues.
• Strong appreciation of gas safety management systems, operational risk assessment, incident control, assurance and evidence-based closure of actions.
• Commercial and industry awareness, including the ability to work with OEMs, regulators, delivery partners and internal stakeholders to balance safety, compliance, resilience, value and deliverability.

Essential

• Knowledge of compressor assets, gas generators, auxiliary systems, compressor control and instrumentation, associated OEM arrangements and the operational impacts of asset health, service bulletin and obsolescence decisions.
• Ability to lead policy, standards and work procedure ownership across rotating machinery and control, including document accountability, SME coordination and implementation into maintenance and project delivery.
• Experience of developing governance, triage and reporting processes for technical issues, including OEM bulletins, remote monitoring insights, operational risk assessments and action close-out evidence.
