Job summary

National Gas is seeking an Operations Technician (Instrumentation) to ensure safe, reliable operation of transmission assets across terminals, compressor stations, pipelines and AGIs. You will install, maintain, inspect, commission and respond to emergencies, using technical expertise to optimise asset performance within strict safety standards.

Based at Avonbridge site with 5 days on site, travel to support other sites in the zone, and a potential overtime/standby earning opportunity.

Qualifications

• Proven maintenance and operational knowledge in instrumentation, electrical, and control systems.
• Experience diagnosing faults and rectifying on process plants.
• Inspections in hazardous areas with safe systems of work.
• Understanding health and safety legislation relevant to the role.
• Time-served apprenticeship or equivalent in instrumentation.
• BTEC/NVQ or city & guilds in engineering discipline.

Responsibilities

• Carry out installation, inspection, commissioning, maintenance, fault-finding and repair on instrumentation systems.
• Support safe operation of terminals, compressor stations, pipelines and AGIs following safe procedures.
• Issue permits, implement isolations and control operations for internal teams and contractors.
• Maintain accurate maintenance and asset records for regulatory compliance.
• Support construction, commissioning and integration of new assets; identify upgrades.
• Participate in emergency response, standby rotas and incident management.

Candidate must be located within a reasonable commutable distance to the Avonbridge site.

About The Role

As an Operations Technician (Instrumentation), you'll play a vital role in the safe, reliable and efficient operation of National Gas transmission assets across a defined geographic area. Working across terminals, compressor stations, pipelines and AGIs, you'll undertake installation, maintenance, inspection, commissioning and emergency response activities, helping to ensure the continued delivery of critical gas infrastructure. You'll use your technical expertise to optimise asset performance, support new projects, maintain the highest safety standards and contribute to the resilience of the UK's gas transmission network.

What You'll Be Doing

• Carrying out installation, inspection, commissioning, maintenance, fault-finding and repair activities on instrumentation systems and associated plant equipment.
• Supporting the safe operation of terminals, compressor stations, pipelines and AGIs by following established policies, procedures and safe systems of work.
• Issuing permits, implementing isolations and contributing to the safe control of operations for both internal teams and contractors.
• Maintaining accurate maintenance, asset and operational records to ensure compliance with internal standards and regulatory requirements.
• Supporting the construction, commissioning and integration of new assets, as well as identifying opportunities for equipment upgrades and improvements.
• Participating in emergency response activities, standby rotas and incident management arrangements to support business resilience.
• Monitoring contractor activities and protecting pipeline assets to ensure technical, operational and safety standards are consistently maintained.

Essential

• Possess proven maintenance and operational knowledge and experience gained within a relevant engineering discipline of Mechanical, Electrical, Instrumentation, Electronics or Control Systems
• Undertaking maintenance, fault diagnosis and rectification work within the Oil & Gas (or other similar Process) Industry within relevant discipline
• Undertaking inspection work on equipment installed in hazardous areas and Operating, controlling and undertaking work within Safe Systems of Work
• Understanding of relevant discipline and Health & Safety Legislative Requirements
• Operation and control of process plant and equipment
• Possess relevant Training Certification and/or Evidence of Competencies to support knowledge and experience
• Time-served Apprenticeship (or other recognised Training Scheme) in a relevant engineering discipline (Instrumentation)
• BTEC National Certificate (or equivalent City & Guilds, NVQ/SVQ Level 3) in relevant engineering discipline
• Valid current driving licence
