Job summary

National Grid Electricity Distribution (NGED) invites applications for Head of Engineering Design to lead a large multi-site engineering team across Bristol, Cardiff, Tipton and Castle Donington.

The role drives safe, compliant, cost-efficient design for our 11kV–132kV assets and oversees major project delivery.” You will shape the team’s structure, implement standard design practices, and collaborate with Major Projects to ensure on-time delivery and quality while supporting the future network

Qualifications

• Significant experience in electrical engineering design with leadership of large teams.
• Proven track record delivering operational and strategic improvements.
• Willingness to travel across license areas as required.

Responsibilities

• Lead a 90+ engineering team across Tipton, Castle Donington, Bristol and Cardiff, fostering safety and delivery excellence.
• Set objectives and performance measures aligned with Major Projects and broader goals.
• Ensure timely delivery of high-quality EHV designs for substations and protection systems.
• Maintain governance to ensure designs meet NGED policies and CDM regulations.
• Develop and embed an outsourcing model for Design & Build to support growth.
• Drive design throughput, productivity and cost-efficient project delivery through standardisation and automation.
