Job description

Engineer – Structural Integrity

Locations: Hybrid working with a primary location of Derby, Warrington or Manchester.

Our mission is to deliver clean, affordable energy for all. The Small Modular Reactor (SMR) provides a British solution to a global energy crisis, positioning us as a world leader in SMRs and a premier green export technology.

The team

The Component & Structural Integrity Integration team provides technical coordination and governance on the use of codes and standards, ways of working and structural integrity policy and requirements for pressure equipment within the SMR programme. Operating across multiple disciplines—including design, manufacturing and safety—it ensures compliance with nuclear, pressure equipment and international regulatory requirements, supporting both UK delivery and global deployment.

The role

In this context, you will support our Lead Engineer – Structural Integrity within our growing integration team. You will be central to developing the rules, requirements and safety case that ensure the integrity of mechanical pressure boundary components across the full plant, with a focus on the highest nuclear safety consequence components. This includes integrating design, stress, material, fabrication, non‑destructive examination and quality.

What You’ll Be Doing
  • Develop and maintain structural integrity requirements and technical guidance for mechanical components.
  • Apply cross‑disciplinary knowledge (design, materials, analysis, manufacturing, inspection) to ensure component reliability.
  • Contribute to structural integrity safety case development, including technical arguments and supporting evidence.
  • Support design teams to interpret and embed integrity requirements into designs.
  • Collaborate with internal teams, external partners and the supply chain to deliver integrated solutions.
  • Support regulatory engagement activities through high‑quality technical input.
  • Manage your own workload to deliver against programme, cost and quality expectations.
What We’re Looking For
  • A degree or HND in a relevant engineering or technical discipline.
  • Experience applying structural integrity principles within complex engineering environments.
  • Broad understanding of pressure‑retaining components and relevant design codes (e.g., ASME, EN, PED/PSSR).
  • Ability to construct and present logical, evidence‑based safety arguments.
  • Strong planning, coordination and stakeholder engagement skills.
Location

Flexible and hybrid working is offered, with the role based at any Rolls‑Royce SMR location. Occasional travel may be required to support collaboration.

Benefits
  • Salary: £44,600 – £52,500 DOE.
  • Bonus – Performance related target opportunity 12.5 %.
