Job description

A strong tutor can help someone see opportunities they had stopped believing were possible.

As an Employability Tutor, you will help people build the confidence, skills and workplace behaviours they need to move towards sustainable employment.

You will design and deliver accredited Employability and Customer Service courses, run practical employability workshops and help learners apply what they have learned to real vacancies.

This is a role where you can see people develop from one session to the next, and know that your teaching has helped them take a meaningful step towards work.

The real job

This role combines teaching, coaching and employment-focused delivery.

You will:

  • Design and deliver structured courses that meet awarding-body standards.
  • Deliver accredited Employability and Customer Service qualifications.
  • Run CV surgeries, interview workshops and workplace-behaviour sessions.
  • Help learners identify their strengths and address barriers to employment.
  • Adapt your delivery for different abilities, learning needs and levels of confidence.
  • Connect learning with relevant vacancies and employer expectations.
  • Maintain high standards of attendance, participation and course completion.
  • Track learner progress and maintain accurate evidence and records.
  • Work towards engagement, progression and job-outcome targets.

Success is not measured only by delivering the planned content. It is measured by whether learners engage, develop, complete their programme and become better prepared to move into employment.

You will balance encouragement with accountability and model the punctuality, preparation and professionalism you are teaching.

A day in the role

You may start by reviewing your lesson plan, learner progress and attendance before preparing the resources for your first session.

Your morning could involve delivering a structured workshop on interview techniques, workplace communication or customer service. Some learners will participate confidently; others may need encouragement, additional explanation or a firmer reminder of expectations.

You will manage the group, adapt activities where necessary and make sure the session remains purposeful.

  • Update learner records and assessment evidence.
  • Follow up unexplained absence or falling engagement.
  • Give an individual feedback on their CV or interview approach.
  • Support someone with an additional learning need.
  • Speak with an employer or employer-engagement colleague about upcoming vacancies.
  • Adapt course content to reflect real workplace requirements.
  • Deliver a remote workshop or individual support session.
  • Review progress against engagement and employment targets.

The rewarding part is seeing learners become more confident, capable and ready to present themselves to employers.

The parts people can underestimate

You will need to be comfortable with:

  • Holding the attention of groups with different abilities and motivations.
  • Addressing disruptive behaviour or low participation constructively.
  • Following up absence and maintaining a minimum 90% engagement rate.
  • Delivering accredited content while keeping sessions practical and engaging.
  • Adapting your approach for additional learning and communication needs.
  • Teaching face-to-face and through virtual platforms.
  • Giving honest feedback when work does not meet the required standard.
  • Completing assessment evidence, learner records and documentation accurately.
  • Working towards course-completion, progression and job-outcome KPIs.
  • Changing delivery to meet contractual, employer or labour-market requirements.

This role will suit someone who enjoys teaching but also values structure, clear standards and measurable results. It is not a role where administration and learner outcomes sit separately from teaching, they are fundamental parts of it.

What you need to bring

We are looking for evidence of:

  • A recognised teaching or tutoring qualification.
  • Experience designing and delivering accredited employability, customer service or comparable courses.
  • Confident delivery to groups and individual learners.
  • Supporting people with additional learning needs.
  • Delivering learning remotely and using digital teaching tools.
  • Providing clear, constructive written and verbal feedback.
  • Maintaining accurate learner records and assessment evidence.
  • Working towards engagement, completion, progression or employment targets.
  • Strong organisation, preparation and reliable follow-through.

Experience in employability, welfare to work, adult learning or community training would be valuable.

You should also understand that publicly funded training must meet contractual and quality requirements. We need someone who can protect the quality of learning while keeping delivery focused on progression and employment.

How you will teach

You will:

  • Set clear learning objectives and expectations.
  • Create sessions that are structured, practical and relevant.
  • Make learning accessible without reducing standards.
  • Build confidence while encouraging personal responsibility.
  • Adapt your approach without losing sight of the course outcomes.
  • Recognise progress and address concerns early.
  • Use feedback to improve learner performance.
  • Bring energy, credibility and professionalism to every session.
What success looks like

Within your first 90 days, you should be confidently delivering accredited courses, managing groups and maintaining accurate learner records.

Your sessions should be structured and engaging, with learners understanding what is expected of them and how the programme connects with employment.

We would also expect to see:

  • At least 90% learner engagement.
  • Strong attendance and course-completion levels.
  • Accurate and timely assessment evidence.
  • Learners producing stronger CVs and applications.
  • Improved confidence and workplace readiness.
  • Clear progression towards interviews, training or employment.
  • Positive relationships with colleagues, employers and partners.
  • Course content that remains relevant to workplace expectations.

You will receive structured induction, management support and regular feedback.

What you will get

You will have the opportunity to use your teaching skills in a role with visible social impact.

Benefits include:

  • 25 days’ annual leave plus bank holidays.
  • Pension contributions.
  • Employee ownership share scheme.
  • GP, counselling and wellbeing support.
  • Employee assistance programme.
  • Headspace membership.
  • Gym discounts and wellbeing rewards.
  • Learning and development opportunities.
  • Enhanced benefits with service.

You will also develop wider experience in accredited learning, employability, learner progression and employer-led delivery.
