Job summary

Ring firmware engineers own software running on IoT devices, from architecture to delivery. You will design and implement firmware for microcontrollers and RTOS, own components end to end, and collaborate with hardware, cloud, and product teams to ship reliable devices.

You will debug across the stack, contribute to CI/test infrastructure, and work closely with multi-disciplinary teams to translate requirements into robust firmware features for real-world products.

Qualifications

• A background in professional software development or embedded development in C/C++.
• Experience with an RTOS in production environments: task design, inter-task comms, and synchronization.
• Experience implementing low-level drivers and interrupt service routines.
• Experience with embedded testing: unit/integration tests or CI pipelines for embedded hardware.
• Experience owning a software component end to end from design to delivery and maintenance.

Ring builds home security products used by millions of customers worldwide. Our firmware engineers own the software that runs on those devices, from first boot through to the features customers use every day. We are looking for engineers who design and build software systems that happen to run on embedded targets, and who think carefully about correctness, maintainability, and the long-term health of a codebase as much as they think about performance.

You will own firmware components end to end, from architecture through to delivery and maintenance, working closely with hardware, cloud, and mobile teams to ship products that work reliably in the real world.

Key job responsibilities

• Design and implement firmware for battery-powered and wired IoT devices running on microcontrollers and RTOS environments
• Own components end to end: design, implementation, code review, testing, and maintenance across product generations
• Define and implement software interfaces consumed by other teams and services

A day in the life

You will spend your time designing and implementing firmware features, reviewing code, debugging production issues, and working through technical trade-offs with your team. New products bring new hardware, new constraints, and new problems to solve. The work is hands‑on and the decisions you make end up in devices in customers' homes.

About the team

The Ring Firmware team develops and delivers firmware for Ring's camera‑centric devices across new products, existing device support, and new feature development. We are a large team with sites in Europe and Asia and stakeholders in the US.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

• Experience (non‑internship) in professional software development, or experience in embedded development in C/C++
• Experience with an RTOS in a production environment: task design, inter‑task communication, and synchronisation primitives
• Experience implementing low‑level drivers and interrupt service routines.
• Experience with testing discipline in an embedded context: unit testing, integration testing, or CI pipelines targeting embedded hardware
• Experience owning a software component end to end, from design through to delivery and maintenance

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or equivalent work experience
• Experience with wireless protocols in a production environment: BLE, Wi‑Fi, or similar
• Experience with firmware development and testing of battery‑powered products
• Experience designing software libraries or interfaces consumed by other teams or products
• Experience with common bus protocols: SPI, I2C, UART
• Experience with Embedded Linux, Yocto, or BSP development
• Experience with development tools such as IAR, Keil, or equivalent
• Experience with scripting languages such as Python for build automation or test infrastructure
• Experience building or integrating AI or ML capabilities into embedded or IoT products
• Experience with AWS IoT services or cloud‑connected device development
