Job summary

HID Global in Cardiff seeks an Associate Engineering Manager for Embedded Product to lead a newly formed embedded team. You will recruit, mentor and guide engineers while delivering production reader technology on ARM Cortex-M with Zephyr RTOS.

You will also act as Scrum Master and align with PACS platform governance. The role requires strong C skills, hardware awareness, and experience leading engineers in a matrix organisation within an Agile setting.

Qualifications

• Engineering degree in Computer Science, Electronics or related discipline or equivalent practical experience.
• 7+ years of professional embedded software development experience.
• Strong proficiency in C for resource-constrained embedded systems.
• Hands-on experience with ARM Cortex-M and an RTOS (Zephyr strongly preferred; FreeRTOS or equivalent considered).
• Experience leading engineers: mentoring, technical direction, or acting as a focal point.
• Ability to operate in a matrix organisation delivering inside another engineering organisation's platform.
• Fluent with git-based version control, code review, unit testing and CI/CD for embedded builds.
• Understanding of hardware design constraints to guide technical decisions with hardware engineers.
• Experience in Agile frameworks (Scrum, Kanban) and continuous improvement.
• Excellent verbal and written communication capable of explaining trade-offs to non-specialists.

Responsibilities

• Lead the team from the ground up: recruitment, onboarding, performance reviews and development plans.
• Provide hands-on technical leadership: design, implementation, review and debugging of production reader technology on ARM Cortex-M under Zephyr RTOS.
• Serve as Scrum Master: plan sprints, stand-ups, reviews and retrospectives; refine backlog with Product Owner.
• Own delivery of features for IDT desktop and embedded readers; align with PACS platform governance and release cadence.
• Champion platform reuse and harmonisation, avoid forks; coordinate with PACS and other sites.
• Coordinate engineers from Krakow, Chennai and La Ciotat; ensure clear interfaces and shared reviews.
• Document architecture and decisions to support maintainability beyond first release.
