Job summary

Cummins Inc. is offering a 12-month placement in Electrochemistry within the Battery Technology team in Milton Keynes. The role focuses on experimental lithium-ion battery test systems, data analysis and development of lab instrumentation.

This placement provides exposure to a global engineering environment and hands-on lab work. You will collaborate with Scientists, Engineers and Technicians across battery development projects and gain understanding of thermal, mechanical and electrical factors

Qualifications

• Currently pursuing a BEng or MEng in Mechanical, Automotive, Aerospace, Electrical, Mechatronics, Physics or related discipline (2 years completed).
• Familiarity with CAD software and engineering design principles.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
• Good work ethic with sense of ownership and responsibility.
• Experience using Python or MATLAB would be advantageous.

Responsibilities

• Support design, assembly and operation of experimental lithium-ion battery test systems.
• Learn how battery cells are characterised, validated and evaluated through life cycle.
• Assist in development of lab equipment to investigate battery performance and ageing.
• Plan and execute experimental investigations involving battery cells and hardware.
• Analyse large datasets to identify trends and insights using engineering tools.
• Develop software-based tools and visualisations to interpret results.
• Present findings through technical reports and project reviews.
• Collaborate with Scientists, Engineers and Technicians on battery development projects.
• Understand how mechanical, thermal and electrical factors influence battery performance and durability.
