Job summary

Cummins invites applications for a placement year in Battery Technology within the Accelera unit in Milton Keynes. The role runs Summer 2027, onsite three days per week, with travel/relocation as needed. You will gain exposure to design, testing, and data analysis of lithium-ion systems.

You’ll work with scientists and engineers on lab instrumentation, develop software tools, and learn how battery performance ages under real-world conditions.

Qualifications

• Currently studying towards a BEng or MEng degree in Mechanical Engineering, Automotive Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, Physics or a related discipline. Ideally, a student who has completed 2 years of the degree.
• Familiarity with CAD software and engineering design principles would be beneficial.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
• Good work ethic, sense of ownership and responsibility.
• Enthusiasm for experimental engineering and hands-on laboratory work.
• Good communication and presentation skills.
• Excellent organisation and time management skills.
• Experience using Python, MATLAB or other technical computing tools would be advantageous.

Responsibilities

• Support the design, assembly and operation of experimental lithium-ion battery test systems.
• Learn how advanced battery cells are characterised, validated and evaluated throughout their life cycle.
• Assist in the development of laboratory equipment and instrumentation used to investigate battery performance and ageing.
• Plan and execute experimental investigations involving battery cells and supporting hardware.
• Analyse large datasets using engineering and data analysis tools to identify key trends and insights.
• Develop software-based tools and visualisations to support interpretation of experimental results.
• Present findings and recommendations through technical reports and project reviews.
• Collaborate with Scientists, Engineers and Technicians on advanced battery development projects.
• Develop an understanding of how mechanical, thermal and electrical factors influence battery performance and durability.
