Job description

Stirling Dynamics is recruiting a Test Engineer to join the Cockpit Controls team.

Stirling Dynamics designs, develops, and produces a wide range of high-end aircraft simulator 'inceptors' (pilot-machine interface devices). Our family of active controls is feature-rich, highly reconfigurable, and suitable for single or dual (linked) aircraft cockpit configurations. Our active products include side sticks, throttles, collectives, cyclics, tillers, and pedals. These controls are extremely compact, fully active, and benefit from low acquisition and through-life costs.

We have pioneered active control technology since the early 1990s and hold many industry and technology firsts, including supplying controls for the first fully active fly-by-wire helicopter flight. Currently, we supply active sticks and throttles for the new F-35 pilot training simulators and continue innovating in cockpit control technology. The 'Cockpit Control' sector of our business, which delivers the inceptor products, requires a Test Engineer within the Production Department. The products comprise electrical, electronic, and mechanical subassemblies, and the role involves:

  • Goods-in testing and fault finding of PCBs
  • Development, First Article, and Acceptance testing of company products (equipment and system level)
  • Interpreting and accurately recording test results
  • Supporting the delivery and management of products through testing (throughput/capacity planning)
  • Reading and interpreting engineering drawings, electrical schematics, and instructions
  • Acting as a stakeholder in defining requirements for PCBs, products, and test equipment/facilities
  • Contributing to the upkeep of the test equipment asset inventory, including tracking, maintenance, and purchasing of new equipment
  • Writing test procedures for build-to-print and development products
  • Reviewing conceptual designs from a test perspective and providing feedback
  • Undertaking failure analysis investigations and producing non-conformance reports
  • Providing in-service production support, fault diagnosis, and repair testing
Responsibilities

Responsible for the product test area within the business, ensuring the performance of the test function meets the required time, cost, and quality standards. Key duties include:

  • Ensuring necessary skills, equipment, tools, and processes/procedures are in place to support testing and maintain a safe working environment
  • Supporting junior team members to achieve project objectives
  • Implementing and improving testing documentation such as test procedures, reports, and inspections
  • Maintaining test equipment and rigs, including calibration and asset management
Essential Skills
  • Flexible, can-do attitude
  • Professional demeanor
  • Self-motivated with a focus on task completion
  • Pride in work quality
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • IT literacy
  • Organized, thorough, with attention to detail in documentation
  • Ability to work independently and in a team
  • Methodical and pragmatic problem-solving skills
  • Ability to meet tight deadlines
Experience
  • Minimum 2 years' experience in a similar high-precision, high-value electro-mechanical role within Aerospace or Precision Engineering sectors
  • Proficiency in reading and interpreting mechanical and electrical drawings
  • Experience testing electromechanical devices with embedded software
  • Fault finding and root cause analysis at component and system levels
Benefits

Competitive package (Grade 2-3, £25,000 - £40,000 depending on experience).
