Role Overview

The Electrical Design Engineer will have proven experience working on LV and/or HV distribution systems, including energy centres, transformers, CHP, solar PV, standby generation, heat pumps, and connection to DNO electricity systems. Projects are generally on live operational sites with critical systems requiring resilience. The candidate should have experience in project ownership from analysis to design, installation, operation, and maintenance of electrical systems.

The role involves producing designs and managing external design teams to deliver detailed, buildable designs that mitigate construction and operational risks, especially for energy-saving measures on live sites. The engineer will also coordinate with mechanical and controls engineers and adapt designs to project changes, considering impacts on other disciplines, project delivery, and costs.

Key Responsibilities & Accountabilities
  • End-to-end development and delivery of electrical designs.
  • Developing outline designs and detailed project specifications in collaboration with other disciplines.
  • Reviewing designs and monitoring external designers up to RIBA stage 4 for quality assurance.
  • Reviewing electrical specifications and designs from consultants and subcontractors, supporting mechanical and controls engineers.
  • Coordinating designs with other disciplines to ensure scope completeness.
  • Managing electrical design approvals from clients and third parties, ensuring compliance with project requirements, schedule, and budget.
  • Ensuring designs can be safely implemented on live sites with minimal disruption.
  • Organizing and participating in on-site meetings, surveys, and inspections.
  • Managing personnel, projects, and resources effectively.
  • Liaising with design and construction teams, consultants, contractors, suppliers, and clients.
  • Communicating with District Network Operators for connection applications and compliance.
  • Staying updated with relevant regulations and guidance.
  • Providing analysis and interpretation of technical information, leading discussions with clients and third parties to resolve issues.
  • Developing and improving systems of work for efficiency and sustainability.
  • Preparing reports and documentation per document control procedures.

The list above is not exhaustive and may change based on business needs.

Knowledge, Skills, Education & Experience
  • BSc or BEng in Electrical Engineering.
  • 3-5+ years of commercial experience, preferably in energy or SME environments within operational buildings.
  • Experience with LV/HV systems, transformers, heat pumps, CHP, solar PV, on-site generation, and protection.
  • Knowledge of international standards: CIBSE, HTMs, HBNs, BS 7671, Building Regulations.
  • Experience with ENA Engineering Recommendations P28, P29, G5, G99, and G100.
