Job description

Reports to: Head of Music

Job Purpose: Gordonstoun has been leading the way in Hahnian Education for more than 80 years. Our uniquely broad curriculum provides challenge in the classroom, at sea and in the mountains, on the stage and on the sports fields, enabling students to discover the truth in our motto - Plus Est En Vous - there is more in you. The key focus of this role is to enthuse students and promote the importance of music to the young people of Gordonstoun. You will bring a range of musical skills to the school and will work across the whole age range from Years 1 to 13.

This job description outlines the main responsibilities and duties of the post of Musician in Residence. Given the diverse skills which different musicians will bring to the department, it does not attempt to be definitive.

Responsibilities of all staff:

• Comply with Gordonstoun's policies and procedures on Child Protection and Health and Safety.

• Perform any other tasks as required to support the school.

Major responsibilities of the role:

• Assist with ensembles appropriate to your skills.
• Support concerts and productions.
• Supervise Junior School practice sessions.
• Conduct weekly theory classes.
• Assist with technological aspects of music, recordings, etc.
• Support GCSE and A-level Music students.
• Accompany pupils and ensembles for concerts and exams, if appropriate.
• Teach individual pupils, appropriate to your skills.

General contribution to the Music Department:

• Inspire students and nurture enthusiasm for music.
• Promote the subject beyond the classroom.
• Collaborate with colleagues in the department.
• Support department activities through administration, displays, and organization of equipment and instruments.
• Maintain high standards of student behaviour.

Pastoral and general duties:

• Attend chapel at least twice a week.
• Participate in full staff meetings in the Senior School.
• Applicants may also apply to be a Tutor, involving student support, boarding house duties, and being part of the duty team; this role attracts additional pay.

Accommodation:

A room or flat suitable for single accommodation can be provided at a nominal charge, to be vacated within three days of the summer term's end. Candidates may also apply for residence within a boarding house, where no charge is levied for accommodation in recognition of the duties involved. All meals are provided during term time in the school refectory.

Salary and terms:

This is a fixed-term eleven-month appointment, with the possibility of extension depending on skills and experience. Salary is paid monthly from September to July. Seven weeks of fully paid holidays are included, and hours are annualized. There is an opportunity to be a boarding house tutor and part of the staff duty team, which attracts additional pay.
