Job description

Job Title: Mental Health Specialist

To operationally deliver a high-quality service of mental health expertise to our patients, families, and staff.

Key Responsibilities:
  1. Provide expert advice on the care of mental health patients, including legal aspects of detention, risk assessment, mental health assessment and treatment, environmental risk assessment, restraint, and involuntary administration of medication.
  2. Support the Lead Mental Health Practitioner in developing and implementing the trust's Mental Health Strategy, ensuring services are developed, delivered, and evaluated to meet frontline professional and operational priorities.
  3. Communicate highly complex and sensitive information effectively across multiple organizations, fostering strong relationships with patients, families, clinical teams, and external partners. Present complex information verbally and in writing, as appropriate.
  4. Provide support to patients, carers, and trust staff. Participate in joint planning meetings to facilitate patient admissions, discharges, and transfers.
  5. Manage Mental Health Act section papers, liaising with Nottinghamshire Healthcare Trust to ensure compliance with correct processes.
  6. Support the review and evaluation of regional and national guidelines, including the Nottingham/Nottinghamshire ICB Mental Health Strategy, and develop links with external partners to implement actions across the organization.
  7. Act as a visible leader across clinical areas, advising staff on the management of Mental Health Act section papers and providing education on caring for patients with mental health concerns.
