Job summary

Sense College in Peterborough is seeking an Education Support Worker to join a team delivering learning and community activities for learners with complex needs. The role is fixed term, 21 hours per week, across three days (Wednesday to Friday), with a 9:15am–4:15pm timetable and 38 teaching weeks per year.

You will support individuals and groups, maintain CPD, contribute to ILPs, and help assess progress while using a range of communication approaches such as BSL, Makaton and PECS.

Qualifications

  • Previous experience of working with people who have a sensory impairment, autism or learning disability would be an advantage.
  • Able to work effectively as part of a team whilst demonstrating your own initiative; experience of person-centred planning, keeping records up to date and providing personal care.
  • Level 2 in English and Maths is an essential requirement for this role.

Responsibilities

  • To support individuals / groups within the centre and community.
  • Maintaining a Continuous Professional Development (CPD).
  • Representing the college at external professional development events for Support Workers.
  • Contributing to Individual Learning Plans/ targets and monitoring progress of these.
  • Playing a key role in ongoing assessment of learners
  • To provide a customised, responsive and high quality service to people with multiple sensory impairments, physical and/or learning disabilities who use Sense services.
  • To deliver services which meet or exceed organisational expectations and standards.

Could you be a Sense Education Support Worker?

We now have an opportunity for an Education Support Worker to join our Sense College in Peterborough.

This is a fixed term position, due to end in July 2027, working 21 hours a week across three days, Wednesday to Friday 9.15am - 4.15pm. Our college is open Monday to Friday for 38 weeks of the year.

We use a total communication approach which includes a variety of methods such as BSL / Sign Supported English / On Body Signing / Intensive Interaction /Pictorial Symbols and Symbol Systems (PECS) / Hand Under Hand Exploration / Objects of Reference / Voice Output Communication Aids / Vocalisation, Facial Expression and Body Language

Our timetabled activities, both in house and accessed at other local facilities, ensure the interests of the individual can be explored and used to motivate while encouraging learning opportunities. We celebrate and promote the diverse nature of our learners, embracing fundamental values, whilst encouraging a culture of mutual respect and tolerance. Sessions include Communication , Creative Arts, Therapies & physical activities, Life skills and Community Access.

Your duties can include:

  • To support individuals / groups within the centre and community.
  • Team members who support learners with core funded educational needs will also carry out the following education related responsibilities under the guidance of senior education colleagues.
  • Maintaining a Continuous Professional Development (CPD).
  • Representing the college at external professional development events for Support Workers.

  • Playing a key role in ongoing assessment of learners

Your required skills and experiences:

  • Previous experience of working with people who have a sensory impairment, autism or learning disability would be an advantage, as would knowledge of BSL, Makaton or other methods of communication however, training will be provided.
  • It is essential that you are able to work effectively as part of a team whilst demonstrating your own initiative. You will have had experience of person centred planning, keeping records up to date and providing personal care.
  • Level 2 (or equivalent) in English and Maths is an essential requirement for this role.
