BlueJay Ecology Ltd is currently seeking experienced Ecological Clerks of Works (ECoWs) to support a busy programme of rail and highways maintenance projects. The work will predominantly involve supervising vegetation clearance as part of infrastructure maintenance schemes across southern England.
We are a Hampshire-based ecological consultancy delivering pragmatic, high-quality ecological support for clients in the infrastructure, construction and development sectors. While our company is based in Southampton, this is a field-based role, and most projects are located in the southern counties below the M4 corridor. Much of our workload comes from long-term relationships in the rail and highways sectors, where we are trusted to deliver responsive, practical support through challenging environments and tight schedules.
We are looking to bring in additional ECoWs on a PAYE basis, though we’re happy to have conversations with experienced freelance ecologists who may be a good fit. Initial contracts will be for around six months, but for the right people, there is potential for longer-term or even permanent roles within the team.
Applicants must have prior ECoW experience. Experience in the rail or highways sectors is beneficial, but not essential. Protected species licences are an advantage, but not a requirement. A current UK driving licence is essential, as the requires travel between multiple sites. Where necessary, a Chapter 8–compliant works van can be provided for site access and transport.
A CSCS card is useful as it helps to streamline onboarding, and we can support suitable candidates in obtaining their PTS and Highways Passport certifications where required.
All applicants must be able to comply with random drugs and alcohol testing, as this is standard practice across the rail and highways industries.
Although the role is primarily focused on ECoW duties, there may be opportunities to contribute to survey work and reporting depending on your experience, availability and interests.
