Job summary

Clancy is recruiting an Ecological Clerk of Works in Andover to support two major water infrastructure projects. The role involves providing site-based ecological advice, supervision and monitoring to ensure works meet ecological legislation and permits.

You’ll conduct inspections, pre-start checks, and watching briefs, advising on protected species and habitats while coordinating with project teams to deliver works responsibly.

Qualifications

• Full UK Driving License is essential.
• Experience in ecology, environmental or construction-related role.
• Knowledge of UK ecological legislation and protected species requirements.
• Experience carrying out ecological inspections, surveys, monitoring or site-based checks.
• Ability to work alongside operational teams and provide practical advice.
• Degree, HND or equivalent in Ecology, Environmental Science, Biological Sciences or related subject.
• Right to work in the UK.

Responsibilities

• Providing ecological advice and support throughout the construction phase.
• Undertaking pre-start checks, walkovers and site inspections.
• Monitoring compliance with ecological mitigation measures.
• Carrying out ecological supervision and watching briefs.
• Advising on protected species, nesting birds, invasive species, habitats, trees, hedgerows and watercourses.
• Supporting the implementation of ecological controls and precautionary working methods.
• Delivering ecological briefings and toolbox talks.
• Maintaining accurate records, reports and site documentation.
• Working closely with Project Managers, Site Teams, Environmental Advisors, specialist consultants and client representatives.
• Escalating and challenging activities where there is a risk of ecological harm.

We have an exciting opportunity for an experienced Ecological Clerk of Works to support the delivery of two major projects: Southern Water's Andover Link Main and Portsmouth Water's Havant Thicket Reservoir pipeline scheme.

Working closely with construction teams, you'll provide site-based ecological advice, supervision and monitoring throughout the construction phase, helping ensure works are delivered safely, responsibly and in line with ecological legislation, permits and project requirements.

Andover Link Main

A major new pipeline that will connect Winchester and Andover, helping secure future water supplies while reducing the need to abstract water from Hampshire’s internationally important chalk streams.

Part of the wider Havant Thicket Reservoir programme, this project includes an 8.5km pipeline and pumping station that will help transfer sustainable water supplies across the region, strengthening drought resilience and supporting future demand.

These projects pass through environmentally sensitive areas, making ecology a critical part of successful delivery. That’s where you’ll come in.

The Role...

This is a hands-on, site-based role where you’ll work alongside operational teams to identify ecological risks, protect sensitive habitats and species, and help ensure environmental commitments are met.

You’ll undertake ecological inspections, pre-start checks and site walkovers, provide ecological supervision and watching briefs where required, and advise project teams on mitigation measures and ecological controls.

You’ll be a trusted source of ecological expertise, helping teams understand constraints, solve problems and deliver works in the right way.
