Job Description

Location: Ballymena

• Working Days: Monday to Friday
• Duration: Until end of June 2026 with possible extension
• Shift Pattern:

1. Early shifts: Mon-Thu, 7am-3pm; Fri, 7am-1:30pm
2. Late shifts: Mon & Thu, 9:30am-5pm; Tues & Wed, 2pm-10pm; Fri, 10am-4pm

Main Duties & Responsibilities

Security

• Participate in procedures to ensure the security of the premises and its contents.
• Open and close the premises and grounds, unless authorized otherwise by the Estates Site Manager.
• Ensure all windows are closed, and doors and gates are locked at the end of each day.
• Maintain safe custody of keys and manage key allocation for cleaning staff if applicable.
• Operate fire alarms, burglar alarms, building security systems, and security cameras; report faults.
• Respond to after-hour incidents such as break-ins and vandalism; secure premises and report damages.

Mechanical and Electrical Services

• Replace lamps and tubes with appropriate equipment.
• Inspect and report defects in firefighting equipment.

Cleaning (in conjunction with outsourced provider)

• Clean designated areas as directed by the Estates Site Manager.
• Assist in organizing and controlling cleaning staff to meet college standards.
• Maintain grounds, including lawns, hedges, drains, and pathways; ensure cleanliness and tidiness.
• Manage waste, including emptying bins and waste segregation.
• Provide ongoing cleaning services for spills, flooding, toilets, and weather-related issues.
• Clean external signs, light covers, and notices.
• Ensure cleaning equipment and materials are in good condition and stored correctly.
• Prepare facilities for various uses, ensuring internal and external glass surfaces are cleaned safely.
• Ensure cleaning staff wear PPE and workwear when provided.
• Manage deliveries, including goods inwards, and sign off receipt.
• Transport refuse and implement waste segregation policies.
• Prepare rooms for examinations and other events, maintaining furniture and equipment.
• Support inter-campus delivery of goods and equipment.

Handy-person Duties

• Assist maintenance technicians with minor repairs, painting, and general maintenance tasks as instructed.

Training

Care takers will undertake any necessary training to perform their duties effectively, including college-wide policies.

Selection Criteria

• GCSE Maths & English (Grade C or above) or satisfactory performance in college tests.
• Minimum 6 months experience in a caretaker/estates-related role, including security, grounds maintenance, and cleaning.
• Basic Health & Safety at Work Certificate (Level 1) or equivalent experience in PPE, COSHH, manual handling, risk assessments, and hazard awareness.
