Job description

The Colchester Urology Fellowship Programme is designed to provide mid-grade training posts at Specialist Registrar and post-SPR levels. The programme has seven fellows in rotation, with one Specialty Trainee on the East of England Rotation.

A number of previous post holders have progressed to specialized fellowships or secured Consultant Urologist positions via CESR (Article 14).

The Urology unit currently has eight consultants with various sub-specialty interests, enabling them to provide SPR-level mentoring. Three consultants specialize in oncology, performing laparoscopic and robotic radical prostatectomy, as well as laparoscopic and robotic nephrectomy. One consultant specializes in robotic and laparoscopic nephrectomy and pyeloplasty.

The post holder will be employed as a full-time Urology Specialist on the basis of 10 sessions. The role involves:

  • Performing core and specialist urological surgical procedures on own operating lists for patients under the care of Consultant Urological Surgeons.
  • Holding outpatient clinics weekly at Colchester Hospital or peripheral sites served by the trust.
  • Day case surgeries.
  • Diagnostic day case procedures, including flexible cystoscopy (haematuria clinics).
  • Providing educational supervision to junior medical staff.
  • Carrying out and contributing to clinical audit activities and local governance initiatives.
  • Contributing to the writing of basic science and clinical papers.
  • Participating in weekly MDT meetings.
  • Taking on managerial responsibilities where appropriate.
  • Forming a 1 in 8 on-call rota with prospective cover.

East Suffolk and North Essex NHS Foundation Trust (ESNEFT) provides hospital and community healthcare across a wide geographical area serving nearly 800,000 residents. Our services are delivered from two main hospitals in Colchester and Ipswich, along with six community hospitals, high street clinics, and in patients’ homes. We employ nearly 10,000 staff and operate with an annual budget of over £650 million, making us the largest NHS organization in East Anglia.

We are investing in a £100 million capital development programme over the next five years, including constructing a new elective orthopaedic centre at Colchester Hospital, one of the largest in the country, to retain complex and low-volume cases locally. Additionally, a £7 million specialist interventional radiology and cardiac angiography unit is being built at Colchester.

At Ipswich, we are investing £35 million in a new Emergency Department and Urgent Treatment Centre, along with advanced diagnostic imaging facilities (MRI and CT). A £5.3 million molecular diagnostic laboratory is opening soon, alongside plans for a new Breast Care Centre and Children’s Unit.
