Job summary

The Research Nurse/Clinical Trials Practitioner is an autonomous specialist working within the multi-disciplinary team. The post holder will be responsible for the coordination and management of a clinical research portfolio, including in-house, national, and international phase II and III clinical trials in oncology and haematology malignancies.

Responsibilities include educating patients and colleagues, coordinating patient care during trials, collecting and preparing biological samples, gathering trial data, and monitoring drug and treatment side effects. The post holder will develop specialized skills and knowledge related to clinical trials, therapies, and disease sites. They will also enable patients to make informed decisions about trial participation by providing advice and acting as their advocate.

The role is clinically based to support research in Proton Beam Therapy and Neuro-Oncology, with cross-cover for other tumour areas.

Main duties of the job
Research
  1. Apply critical appraisal skills to evaluate research protocols.
  2. Assist in developing and maintaining databases.
  3. Consult with investigators, research organizations, and industry on protocol development and delivery.
  4. Develop knowledge of preclinical data and rationale for testing investigational agents/modality in humans.
  5. Ensure case report forms are completed in accordance with ICH GCP guidelines and timelines.
Clinical
  1. Work autonomously and collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team to meet patient needs.
  2. Participate in identifying potential trial patients.
  3. Ensure pre-study tests are completed and results obtained.
  4. Act as a patient advocate and assist with informed consent processes.
  5. Register and randomize patients onto study protocols.
  6. Participate in treatment decisions per protocol.
  7. Provide direct patient care within the trial role where appropriate.
  8. Collect and prepare biological samples as per protocol.
