Job Description:

Band 3 Nuclear Safety Inspector - Civil Engineering

Job Description (internal)

The Opportunity

As the UK’s independent nuclear regulator, our mission is vital to the nation’s safety and security. We protect society by securing safe operations at nuclear facilities across our nation.

This is an exciting role critical to the decarbonisation of the UK’s economy; our national defence; and the decommissioning of our nuclear legacy. A career with ONR will provide you with opportunities to lead and shape our society’s future use of nuclear technology.

The Role

As an inspector, your job will be varied, undertaking roles across the sector—from regulating the construction of new nuclear facilities to decommissioning legacy sites. Some inspectors focus on planned and reactive site inspections, others assess safety submissions or manage intervention projects. There may also be opportunities for investigations, research projects, and mentoring future inspectors.

As a civil engineering specialist inspector, you will regulate design, construction, testing, operation, maintenance, and decommissioning of various structures. You will assess the safety and security functions of civil engineering structures, ensuring they contain and protect nuclear materials from potential challenges and faults.

Line Management Responsibilities

  • None currently, but there may be future expectations to manage staff.

Work with Us

Our colleagues come from diverse backgrounds and career paths. We value contributions regardless of age, gender, race, ethnicity, disability, sexual orientation, social background, religion, or belief. Our values—supportive, open-minded, fair, and accountable—are central. We invest in our people to build capability, resilience, and wellbeing, emphasizing inclusion and excellence.

Person Specification / What You’ll Need

Qualifications

  • Degree or equivalent in civil/structural engineering or related discipline, or demonstrated performance at an equivalent professional level.
  • Chartered membership of a relevant professional institution, or equivalent experience.
  • Experience with structural design to resist hazard loads using appropriate codes.
  • Methods for modelling the behaviour of complex and aging structures.
  • Understanding of foundation design/construction and geotechnical engineering.
  • Knowledge of nuclear/high hazard facilities (e.g., reactors, processing plants).
  • Ability to analyze complex technical issues and provide clear judgments.
  • Strong communication, decision-making, and influencing skills, with a risk-based approach to work prioritization.

Experience in the nuclear sector or high hazard industries is preferred but not mandatory. Applicants without nuclear experience will undergo structured training to reach Nuclear Safety Inspector level, with a potential salary adjustment during training.

Inclusion

We are committed to inclusivity and welcome applicants from all backgrounds. Reasonable adjustments can be made during the recruitment process. Contact [emailprotected] / 07823741047 / 07786544762 for discussions. We offer guaranteed interviews for disabled applicants meeting minimum criteria, and a Veterans scheme for those leaving armed forces, provided eligibility criteria are met.

Security Clearance

The successful candidate must hold or obtain National Security Vetting clearance at SC level.

Location / Travel

The role can be based at any ONR office (Bootle, Cheltenham, or London). It involves travel across the UK and occasionally abroad, including overnight stays. A full UK driving license is required unless reasonable adjustments are made under the Equality Act 2010.

ONR offers hybrid working arrangements, balancing office and home work, with regular face-to-face meetings to foster collaboration.
