Job description

Overview

Element has an opportunity for a Senior Chemist specializing in method development, training, testing, sample preparation, and test report preparation.


Element Teesside Chemistry focuses on chemical analysis of metal alloys to ISO 17025 and NADCAP standards, using techniques such as ICP-MS, ICP-OES, OES, and gas methods like combustion and fusion. The laboratory also conducts powder characterization tests, including particle size distribution via laser diffraction and sieve analysis, as well as flow rate and density measurements.

Responsibilities

  1. Book work into the Laboratory Management Information System (LIMS) and liaise with customers regarding technical and status queries.
  2. Prepare samples for analysis through microwave dissolution and polishing/linishing/sawing.
  3. Operate in accordance with Element’s quality system and health & safety procedures, review technical standards, and update internal procedures.
  4. Perform chemical analysis of metal alloys using laboratory equipment such as ICP-MS, ICP-OES, OES, and gas techniques.
  5. Conduct powder characterization tests like particle size distribution, sieve analysis, flow rate, and density measurements.
  6. Ensure timely equipment maintenance, calibration, and quality control checks following documented procedures.
  7. Develop and validate methods to improve current calibrations, create new tests per customer and industry standards, and train less experienced staff.
  8. Review and authorize test certificates and reports in LIMS, ensuring accuracy and compliance with standards.
  9. Contribute to workplace efficiency improvements through continuous improvement initiatives.
Skills / Qualifications

  • Good educational background in English, Mathematics, and Science; qualifications in Chemistry, Physics, Materials Science, or related fields are preferred.
  • Previous experience in a busy laboratory environment with a solid scientific background.
  • Proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel).
  • Extensive knowledge of relevant instrumental techniques and experience in method development.
  • Knowledge of quality systems like UKAS and Nadcap is advantageous but not essential.
  • Proactive, self-motivated, and able to work independently and as part of a team under tight deadlines.
  • Excellent organizational, time management, attention to detail, analytical, and communication skills.
