Job description

At Gen Phoenix, we're redefining the future of sustainable materials by transforming what others call waste into premium recycled products. We've already saved over 10,000 tonnes of leather waste from landfill and reduced carbon emissions by more than 250,000 tonnes. As a company recognised as one of Fast Company's 2024 Most Innovative Companies, we're scaling our circular solutions with world-leading brands like Dr Martens, Coach, and Daimler.

The Opportunity

We're seeking a Senior Analytical Chemist to play a key role in expanding Gen Phoenix's product and service solutions. You'll help broaden our range of recycled feedstocks, from tannery waste to end-of-life products, including both Gen Phoenix materials and traditional leathers.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide analytical testing, analysis and insight on waste materials as part of our End of Life product development initiative
  • Ensure laboratory analytical equipment (TGA, DSC) is properly maintained with trained operators
  • Liaise with external test houses where internal capabilities don't exist
  • Utilise chemical expertise to assist the team with new process development for recycling waste streams
  • Lead risk and safety assessments on new materials and processes
  • Structure and maintain data collection systems for projects

What You'll Bring:

  • Experience in wide-ranging Analytical Chemistry, perhaps specialising in thermal methods, GC-MS, and FT-IR
  • Skills in both traditional wet chemistry testing and advanced hyphenated instrumentation-based techniques
  • Strong attention to detail, organisation, and data analytics competence
  • At least 5 years of experience working in an ISO17025 environment
  • Ability to interpret results and recommend next steps
  • Excellent communication skills to translate complex chemical data for diverse audiences
  • Flexibility to work in our fast-paced, dynamic environment to meet tight deadlines

Education Requirements:

  • Minimum Degree in Chemistry
  • Relevant post-graduate qualifications or training is desirable

Join our team of 160+ professionals (growing to 200+) in Peterborough, UK, and be part of a movement making material circularity possible at an epic scale. Every product we create tells a story of regeneration, craftsmanship, and purpose—proving that the future of materials is not just sustainable, it's exceptional.

Based in Peterborough, Gen Phoenix is backed by Material Impact, Tapestry (Coach and Kate Spade), Dr. Martens, and InMotion Ventures (Jaguar Land Rover's investment arm).
